CBD On Point: Rainbow

Deborah Tomasello I first published CBD Om Poimt: Raimbow as a similar pattern called POINTILLISM a few years ago. Because it is among my most popular designs, I worked it up as socks, mitts, shawl, bag, cowl, tunic..just about everything! And now, I am re-releasing the hat pattern with new charts and instructions using Colorworks by Debi Merino/Tencel blends. It is available as a single pattern and as a kit, which includes the pattern and the CBD yarns suggested in the pattern. (Il am happy to create custom colorways for your kit. Just ask me!) Each colorway comprises a 50/50 Merino Tencel blend--one strand of each. Tencel adds a beautiful luster and drape to the fabric, making the design pop. Plus, it has the warmth of Merino without the bulk of the original version. The feel is fabulous.soft and snuggly, but the hardtwist of the fibers yields a wonderful stitch definition for the colorwork design. The hat can be made as a beanie, a slouchy, ora super-slouch hat (super-slouch is pictured). Because Iinclude the amount of yarn needed to knit the hat, rather than have you purchase a 200-yd ball of each color needed, I can offer the kit for a knitter-friendly \$15. SIZE: Adult and Teen - approx. 21"-23" circumference (There is enough yarn to make the super-slouchy fit if you wrok to gauge. If you are a loose knitter, try knitting the beanie or slouch hat) For smaller hat, use a #2 needle. For child, use smaller needle, increase to 144 sts only, and repeat chart 6, rather than 7, times around. MATERIALS: Colorworks by Debi 50/50 Merino-Tencel blend: SSK = Slip one stitch, then slip the next. Insert left needle into the front loops of the slipped stitches and knit them together from this position. BM1p = This is not "the" M1 stitch. It is the Bumpless m1. It is a modification of KFB. See my video tutorial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syFeOy1B90k Bm1p = bumpless m1 purlwise. Works the same way as a bm1, but you purl, reorient the st leg and purl again in the same st, rather than knit.
NOTES: Before you begin
·lf using Colorworks by Debi un-plied yarns, watch tensioning so that you use all strands evenly. You will get the hang of this after just a few rows. Sharp needles help to ensure you pick up both strands with every st. If you find one strand sagging, loosen your hold and it should even out. If it doesn't, you might need to cut the sagging thread and re-tie to the right length. Be sure to catch your floats every 2-3 sts, and do so loosely (to avoid puckers), evenly, and often. Instructions: With circular needle, CO 136 sts using Red. Join to work in the round taking care not to twist stitches. Knit eight rounds corrugated rib using Yellow, Green, Royal and Purple for knit sts and Red for purl sts. (See CHART A). You will increase on the 8th (final) ribbing round to 168 sts as follows: Knit 4, (Knit 2 Purple , then bM1p in first Red purl st, purl next st-so that you have 3 purl sts rather than 2. Do this all the way around to last 4 sts, k2, p2. 168 sts total. For smaller hat, use a #2 needle. For child, use smaller needle, increase to 144 sts only, and repeat chart 6, rather than 7, times around. For Super-Slouch hat, follow CHART B (7 repeats per round) for 68 rounds, decreasing as indicated and switching to DPNs when necessary. It helps to place markers every 24 sts before beginning the decrease (dec) rounds to make decreasing easier. Each dec round has 2 decreases next to each other; k2tog for first dec at beginning of each wedge of dec round and ssk for second dec of each wedge of dec round. After round 68, 7 sts remain. Knit last 7 sts for 4 rounds as an i-cord; cut yarn leaving a tail several inches long. Move all sts from needles to tapestry needle, and pull tightly. Secure from the inside. For less-slouchy hat, work as above, but omit rounds 3, 13, 23, 34, and 44. For even less slouch---a beanie-work as above, but omit rounds, 2, 3, 12, 13, 23, 24, 34, 35, 45, and 46. Finishing: Tie and weave in or trim all color change ends. Wash and block to fit.
