Size: Approx 10" x 20", or as large as the knitter wants to meet her needs Materials: Approx 50g each of any two, highly contrasting fingering-weight wools. One 16" #2 AND #3 circular needle Stitch marker Tapestryneedle Gauge: Not critical in this project Abbreviations: K = knit cO = cast on BO = bind off K2tog = knit two sts together
READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS FIRST
Instructions: With darker color, and #2 needle, C0 157 stitches. Working back and forth, work 5 rows of garter stitch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvaedcQ824l Switching to #3 needle, and using your 1st (darker) color and a backward loop CO, CO 3 stitches on the right-hand needle. Now ad your 2nd (lighter) color and CO 2 more stitches. Now add 1 more stitch with your 1st color. Place stitch marker and add 6 more steek stitches reversing your colors (One 1st color, two 2nd color and three 1st color). You now have a total of 12 steek stitches. Join to work in the round, taking care not to twist stitches, starting and ending each round with 3 garter stitches and working the 6- stitch pattern repeat in CHART A between garter edges. You will begin and end each pattern round with the first st so the sides are symmetrical. NOTE\*\*In order to achieve garter stitch when working in-the-round, you will need to purl those stitches on every other round.
CHART A
Work the piece until it measures 5 inches, or half the desired length. On the next round, K 6 steek stitches, 3 garter stitches, and one 6-stitch pattern repeat. B0 2 stitches, work one 6-stitch pattern repeat and BO 2 more stitches. Complete round. Next round, K 6 steek stitches, 3 garter stitches, and one 6-stitch pattern repeat. C0 2 stitches over where you had B0 2 on the last round, work one 6-stitch pattern repeat and c0 2 more stitches over where you had BO 2 on the last round. Complete round. Continue working as before for another 5 " or enough to match the length of the first half of the piece. BO steek stitches and add 5 rows of garter with smaller needle, working back and forth as in the beginning. WASH and BLOCK piece flat, making sure that the garter edges block flat with the center work. (See Fig A) Run a basting stitch down each side of steek center, about 2 stitches away from center, either by hand or zig-zag on sewing machine to prevent raveling. Placing project "tube" over end of ironing board, or placing a solid object in tube to prevent cutting through both layers, cut steek stitches neatly up the middle (See Fig B). They will naturally curl under. Steam press the steek edges flat, with ends turned under to form a facing on the back side. Baste down to work. (See Fig C) With 1st color, knit an l-cord 24" long. Weave through two holes made in center of work to forma tie.(See Fig D) Finishing: Fill with DPNs, running them through the floats on the back side.
