comfy cowl
\*great for beginning knitters! very easy! by Toni M. Fox
Materials
Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn in Butterscotch Size US $13.0\,/\,9.0\;\mathrm{mm}\,\mathrm{~.~}$ knitting needles (I would suggest using circular needles, as this project ends up taking a lot of space on the needles - just remember not to join at the ends of rows, as this will not be knitted in rounds. I used $14^{\circ}$ needles for the cowl pictured.) Tapestry needle with large eye Three buttons of your choosing (Mine are round $3/4^{\circ}$ in diameter with a shank in the back.)

Abbreviations
$$ \mathrm{co=cast\;on~\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;k=knit\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\mathrm{p=purl}\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\mathrm{bo=bind\;off} $$
Pattern
\*most of this is project stockinette stitch, with a hint of garter stitch at the end to keep the top from curling too much CO50st Row 1: k every st Row 2: p every st Rows 3-24: repeat rows 1 and 2 Rows 25-26: k both rows BO

You now have a rectangle. Fold it around to make an uneven circle with the two knit rows at the top, and so that in the front the edges don't match up. (My ends are lined up so that the part in back sticks up at the top, as you can see in the picture to the left.) Pin it in place, if you wish, and sew the ends in place with the tapestry needle. Sew your buttons in place wherever you want. Sew in all ends. This cowl is meant to just slip over your head; the buttons are purely decorative. It makes both the knitting and the putting it on easier!
