Yeti Knetting - Revised 4/5/2014 To bead or not to bead; to nupp or knot; or perchance just knit.
The chart spaces marked "b" allow for options. You may place a bead on that stitch; you can work a nupp at that location, or you can just knit the stitch. What's a nupp? A nupp is a decorative element (it's typical of Estonian patterns, by the way) created by working multiple stitches into a single stitch, then working them together to create a single stitch on the next row. Since this shawl is worked in the round the multiple stitches are knit together on the next row. If you were/are working flat, then the stitches are purled together. How many stitches? I frequently do a make 5 and am usually satisfied with the result. The test knitter preferred a make 7; and some people need to go to a make 9 in order to have a nupp that satisfies their sensibilities. If you find that doing a k5 together, k7tog, or k9tog is a bit daunting, there are ways to simplify the process. Work a k2tog, or k3tog (whichever you are more comfortable with. Return the new stitch to the left needle; pass the remaining number of stitches in the nupp over the newly created stitch. Finally, transfer the stitch back onto the right needle.
