YETI

Earflap Hat Top-Down You will need: 100g yarn (here: turquoise-blue): 75m/50g, 50g grey boucle tweed yarn (here: grey) 75m/50g for border and front flap, DPN 5mm ,short cicular needle 5mm (60cm long) blunt needle, scissors, 2 cutebuttons Maschenprobe: 13 ST and 19 R make 10cm x 10cm (4" x 4") size of hat: 52cm (appr. M, headsize 54-57) The hat is knit top down in the round, only stockinette stitch. The border is knit in seed stitch: knit1, purl1 and vice versa the next round. Turkish cast on: take 2 DPNs together, wrap the yarn (blue) in 4 times in eight-form around them, like in the photo beyond. You will have 4 loops on each needle.

1.Rd.: take a 3. DPN, knit the 4 loops of the first needle, and then all 4 loops from the 2. needle

2. Rd.: now you distribute the stitches evenly (2 STS on each needle), increase like this: knit 1. ST, inc. 1ST, knit 1ST(4 times, on each needle)

You have 3 STS on each needle now. 3. to 9. Rd.: Increase 1 ST on every needle in each Rd. , I do it by knitting 2 ST out of the first ST of the needle. Do this 10 times: now you have 40 ST (10 per needle) and 9 Rds. 10. to 23. Rd.: Now increase 4 STS every second Rd until you have 68 STS (17 STS on each needle). You have knit 23 Rds. 24. to 40. Rd.: Knit the next 16 Rds. straight on without increases. Put all 17 STS from one needle + 2 STS from the right neighbour-needle and + 2 STS from the left neighbour-needle onto the circular needle and let them rest a bit. These 21 STS will make the frontflap. Now you have: 21 STS on the circular, 15 STS on the left and right DPN, 17 STS on the 4. DPN, which will be the neck. e first earflap: DPN with 15 STS, wtih first colour, knit in stockinette stitch 7 row from 8. row on decrease 2 STS each row (knit together the first and last 2 STS) until you have 5 STS left, cast off, break yarn, make second earflap alike! Border: Knit in seed-stitch with border-yarn in the round, over all resting STS and the earflaps. First put all resting STS onto the circular needle, knit 24 STS out of each earflap and knit 3 Rds. in seed stitch around the hat. Bind off in the 4. Rd. all STS except 23 STS at the front, this will become the frontflap. Knit 10 rows in seed stitch, bind off, leave 40cm (10") of yarn to fix the front flap onto the hat. Take the 2 buttons and fix them at the corners of the front flap like in the photo. Weave in ends. For my sons I made chainstitch-braids at the earflaps, about 15 cm long with small tassels, because they wanted the hat to be very warm and cosy. Braids: Cut a long (150cm\~60") strand of yarn, fold it in half, take a big crochethook, pull the loop through the point of one earflap and crochet in chainstitch with the doubled strand of yarn. Make a knot. Leave the ends about 4cm\~1,5" all rights of pattern, model, pictures and commercial use belong to the author.
