Stargate Fair Isle Hat
Carol Schoenfelder March 2009 The impeta for this hat were a Fair Isle tutorial hosted by Elizabeth Lovick and a discussion in the Stargate Ravelry group about charing glyphs. Plus I had some sock yarn that I wanted to Use up. The gate addresses are for Earth to Abydos and back (shown) - the ones used in the movie Size: 20" circumference (willstretch to fit 22"), 8" height
Gauge:
6 sts and 8 rows per inch
Materials:

one or two size 2 circular needle(s) two size 4 circular needles 150 yds main color (MC) (Il used leftover Knit Picks Essential navy.) 150 yds contrasting color(s) (CC)(I used leffover Lion Brand Magic Stripes.) In the charts, MC is charted clear and CC blue. Note: The hat would be easier to make if done with regular yarn instead of sock yarn and also if done with the same weight of yarn. Note: I don't know the proper way to construct a hat. So I asked my Ds2 how to construct a spherical shape for the top. He produced the formula " c \* cos ( 2 π n r / c ) " for the st count for rnd n (with rnd 0 the start of the decrease section, the widest part of the sphere) -- with c the st count before any decreases and r the ratio of rows to sts in gauge (- after only a moment's thought). That's my starting point for the decrease pattern. I also wanted the stitch count to be a multiple of 7 since I read somewhere that 7 was used in Fair Isle hats. Note: Two rounds of MC separate chars throughout.
Directions:
With main color and size 2 needle(s), cast on 120 sts. Join to knit in the round. Knit 10 rounds. Purl 1 round. Knit I round. Purl I round again. Switch to size 4 needles (60 sts per needle, 120 sts total). Knit 2 rounds. Work pattern A (4 rounds by 4 sts). Knit 2 rounds. Work pattern B (5 rounds by 8 sts).

Knit 2 rounds. Work pattern A again. Knit 2 rounds. Begin the glyphs. The two gate addresses are 8 rounds by 56 sts each. Note: Before starting and affer ending a gate address, knit 2 sts (uncharted) - to bring the total per round to 120 sts. $:2+56+2+2+56+2)$

Earth from Abydos

After finishing the gate addresses, k2tog, k118 (in MC). Knit around in MC (119 sts). Work pattern C. (There is a k2tog at the beginning of each repeat of pattern row 6, bringing the st count to 112 for the last 2 rnds of C.) Knit around in MC. Then \* k14, ssk \* around in MC (105 sts)

Work pattern D, noting the ssk's and k2tog's in MC or CC. Then working only with MC, \* K2, ssk \* around (21 sts) \* K2tog, k1 \* around (14 sts) Ssk around (7 sts)

Finish the hat by cutting the yarn and drawing it through the 7 loops at the top of the hat. Weave in ends. Enjoy --Carol Schoenfelder March 2009
