Updated Stargate Fair Isle Hat Pattern: Earth to Abydos and Back, Revised from 2009 Original with New Glyphs and Band Design

The impeta for this hat were a Fair Isle tutorial hosted by Elizabeth Lovick and a discussion in the Stargate Ravelry group about charting glyphs. (I also had some sock yarn that I wanted to use up.) This is a new version of my Stargate Fair Isle Hat (from March 2oo9). Since posting the pattern I've knit more Fair Isle and more hats. So, I thought I should update the pattern. There are changes to Patterns C and D - plus a change in the glyph for Centaurus (made after viewing the premiere episode for SGU recently). The band is also changed. The gate addresses are for Earth to Abydos and back - the ones used in the movie and pilot for the series.

Directions:

Begin underside of band:

With main color, cast on 128 sts onto each of two needles (a main size 3 needle and a spare size 4 needle) - using a provisional cast on. Join to knit in the round. Place marker at beginning of round. Using a size 3 needle, knit 10 rounds. (128 sts per round) Purl 1 round.

Begin outside of band:

Switch to size 4 needles and attach CC. $\ast_{\mathsf{k}2}$ in CC, k2 in MC, repeat from \* to end - for 8 rounds (or until the outside of the band is the same length as the underside).

Finish band:

Using MC only, knit together 1 st from main needle with 1 st from spare needle. (128 sts) Knit 1 round in MC.

Start patterns:

Work pattern A (4 rounds by 4 sts) Knit 2 rounds in MC. Work pattern B (5 rounds by 8 sts). Knit 2 rounds in MC. Work pattern A again. Knit 1 round in MC. Then: [k3, k2tog, k11 ] 8 times in MC (120 sts) Begin the glyphs (8 rounds by 120 sts):

Work pattern D (7 times around), noting the ssk's and k2tog's in Mc. Finish hat: Finish the hat by cutting the yarn and drawing the loose end through the 7 loops at the top OR by working slip 1, then repeat [slip 1, pass slipped st over ]to end. Weave in ends. Enjoy
