CAFFEINATE! PRESS-STYLE COFFEE MAKER COZY
Designed by Coryna Blasko of heathcoteroad.co.uk Witty, clever, handsome, what's not to like about a man (who's not really a man), in fact, a Doctor, Who travels through time and space battling all manner of aliens intent on destroying the Earth? I couldn't help but notice that the worst of the alien creatures bears a striking resemblance to the popular French press-style of coffee maker. Conspiracy you say? Perhaps. For those among us who have succumbed to the command to Caffeinate!, this hand-knit cozy will help to keep your coffee hot in a not so sinister fashion. Size: fits standard press-style coffe makers that have a domed top, 750 ml (8 teacup) size. Gauge: 20stitches and 30 rows per 10 cm (4') square with 4.0 mm needles.

When using the Caffeinate Coffee Press Cozy, preheat the glass carafe, add freshly ground coffee, fill to desired level with fresh, just off the boil water. Place the plunger lid on the pot with the stem raised. You may slip the Caffeinate Cozy over your coffee press at this time simply by passing the knob of the handle through the hole in the top of the cozy, please see the photographs. When your coffee (or tea) has brewed sufficiently, press the plunger carefully... mmmmmm Caffeinate !!

Pure wool has wonderful insulating properties that will keep your coffee hotter, longer and will also protect you better, should you brush against the the Warmest Winter Hat and it turned out to be perfect. The deep navy blue seemed a good classic colour for this alien inspired image; all the better to hide in the night sky. Another Aran or Worsted weight yarn could be substituted but consider metres before grams and be sure to do a gauge swatch first! |
PATTERN NOTES
Caffeinate is worked in one piece from the base to the top alternating between flat and in the round knitting to accommodate the openings for the handle and the spout, while minimizing any seaming. Please read carefully and pay attention to the turn/ do not turn directions! The welts are made of a set up row that forms purl sts on the back of the fabric, a few rows of reverse stocking stitch ( p on the (RS) and k on the (WS)) the welt is then closed by making a linking row where the current row is worked together with the loops of the p sts on the set up row. This really is easy to do and saves having to sew additional seams later on. The large bobbles along the side of the cozy are set on a background of reverse stocking stitch and slipped k stitches form visual dividers between them. They are also non-traditional bobbles as they are made over 3 rows rather than in one. The bobbles on the top of the cozy are traditional 4 stitch ones. A single row of crochet is worked along the opening for the handle to give structure, a finished edge, and to make the button band and button loops.

With the right side of the piece facing you, begin at the left side edge.
Make 3 buttonhole loops along the first side, check where the buttons should be placed on your press. The one pictured
has button loops at the centre of the 1st, 3rd, and 4th bobbles. Two spaced in the centre of the handle and one below it is
recommended. Button loops can be made by simply making a chain of 2 or 3 loops, then continuing in sc to the top of the
handle area, adjusting sts as necessary to have a flat edge, then continue along the second side to the end without any
shaping.Cut and secure the end.Sew the three buttons to correspond to the loops.

Block your Caffeinate according to the fibre you have chosen. Pure wools respond well to gentle steaming (don't squish
the Dalektanium bobbles!) or damp block it right over your press for a more custom fit. Gift, or use, with joy!! |
