Fosslaug Icelandic Lopapeysa Knitting Pattern: Sustainable, Unisex, Geothermal-Inspired Sweater Design by Linnea Ornstein

ICELANDIC LOPI

The Icelandic sheep has developed through centuries of isolation and harsh climate. This has resulted in wool with unusually long outer fibres with tough and water-resistant qualities, combined with fine, soft inner fibers that insulate against cold temperature. Added to this, the yarn is produced only with natural energy from geothermal power, which makes a sustainable production of a long-lasting and functional material. The Icelandic lopi yarn is produced in several different weights, both spun and unspun. This pattern is adjusted for létt-lopi, a 2-ply yarn. With a light wash after knitting, it makes a soft, lightweight but warm sweater suitable for both indoors or outdoors underneath a jacket.

FOSSLAUG

Iceland is full of natural geothermal pools, some of them happen to be just the right temperature for people to have a bath in them. Fosslaug is one of those hidden gems, situated in the northern parts of Iceland, in the midde of a horse field, surrounded by a river and next to a waterfall, and impossible to find unless you know exactly where to look.

GENERAL

This sweater is knitted seamlessly in the round. Pattern and decreases are worked from chart. The round begins and ends on left side of body, and on yoke on the left side of the back. When one skein ends, don't tie the new skein on - join ends by felting them together. This will give you less ends to weave in, plus a nicer looking garment. SIZES

This pattern is unisex. To make the sweater more feminine, add waist shaping or bust darts (not included in the pattern). For the right size, get the measurements of the intended wearer's favourite sweater. The sweater also tends to stretch a few cm lengthwise after washing.

On next round, change to 4.5 mm needles. Work stockinette stitch with colour A until work measures 41 [43, 44, 45] 46, 47 cm from cast on. End when you have 4 [5, 5, 6] 6, 7 sts left of a round. SLEEVES

Cast on 40 [42, 44, 46] 48, 48 sts 0n 3.5 mm dpn. Join to Work in the round. Knit ribbing \*K1, P1\* all round. Work this way for 4 cm. On the next round, change to 4.5 mm needles while continuing with stockinette stitch. On the first stockinette round, increase 4 sts (44 [46, 48, 50] 52, 52 sts). While knitting in stockinette stitch, increase one stitch after the first and before the last stitch on every 7 rounds. Do this in total 11 [11, 11, 11], 11, 12 times (66 [68, 70, 72] 74, 76 sts). Then continue without increases until the sleeve measures 47 [49, 50, 51] 52, 53 cm from caston. Put the last 4 [5, 5, 6] 6, 7 sts of the round and the first 5 [5, 6, 6] 7, 7 sts of the next round on a separate thread. Left on the needles are 57 [58, 59, 60] 61, 62 sts. Make a second sleeve.

YOKE

Pick up the body piece. Join body and sleeves this way: Put the first 9 [10, 11, 12] 13, 14 sts of the body on a separate thread. Place and knit the first sleeve (the stitches on threads should face each other, to make armpits), 57 [58, 59, 60] 61, 62 sts. Knit 71 [74, 77, 80] 83, 86 sts of the body (front). Put the next 9 [10, 11, 12] 13, 14 sts on a separate thread. Knit the second sleeve like the first, 57 [58, 59, 60] 61, 62 sts. Knit the remaining 71 [74, 77, 80] 83, 86 sts of the body (256 [264, 272, 280] 288, 296 sts). Knit from the chart, make decreases where indicated. Change to dpn's when the work gets smaller.

NECK

When colour chart ends, continue with colour A. 96 [99, 102, 105] 108, 111 sts should remain. On the first round after the chart, decrease 24 [27, 26, 29] 28, 31 sts evenly around the neck - 72 [72, 76, 76] 80, 80 sts. On next round, change to 3.5 mm needles and knit \*K1, P1\* for 4 cm. Bind off loosely with the "Suprisingly stretchy bind-off" (instruction here).

OPTIONAL NECK SHAPING

To make the back of the neck a little higher, you can make a couple of extra short-rows towards the end of the colour work. On row 46, while continuing with colour work, knit to where the sleeve meets the body at the front, slip the next stitch, wrap the yarn around the slipped stitch and put the slipped stitch back. Turn work, purl ("backwards") to where the other sleeve @ Linea Ornstein 2014, all rights reserved. The original Fosslaug meets the body at the front, wrap & turn. Knit to where the body meets the sleeve at the back of the left shoulder, wrap & turn. Purl to where the body meets the sleeve at the back of the right shoulder, wrap & turn. Knit to the first wrap. Continue with pattern and when you reach a wrapped stitch, pick up the wrap and knit the stitch and the wrap together as if to decrease. (Closer instructions here.)

FINISHING

Join sleeve and body under the arms by using kitchener stitch. Weave in all ends. Put the sweater in lukewarm water with hair conditioner and leave it in for a few minutes. Rinse it a couple of times, squeeze out as much water as possible. Place the sweater flat on a towel, roll the towel with the sweater in it and step on the roll to squeeze out the remaining water. Unroll the sweater and tug it a little in both directions, to even out the stitches. Place it on a plane surface to dry. No further blocking is necessary.
