120 yds. worsted wt. or heavy worsted wt. wool, wool-blend, or fuzzy novelty yarn Samples shown in ONline Linie 97 “Iceland" (red) and Patons “Divine" (lavender) Pair of size US 15 (10 mm) needles Size I/9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook (for attaching fringe) Tapestry needle Gauge: 9 sts = 4" in garter stitch on size US 15 (10 mm) needles Stitches/Terms: beginning (beg), bind off (BO), cast on (CO), garter stitch (knit every row), knit (k), purl (p), repeat (rep), stitch (st), yarn over (yo)
Pattern notes:
Prepare fringe first. Wind yarn around 9" long strip of cardboard or a book sixty times, then cut at one end to form sixty 18-inch strands. Set fringe aside. Scarf CO 15 sts loosely. Knit 4 rows. Begin pattern: Row 1 (drop-stitch row): Knit, winding yarn twice around needle in every stitch. Row 2: Knit, dropping extra yarnovers of previous row (15 sts) Rows 3-4: Knit (15 sts) Repeat Rows 1-4 until scarf is desired length, reserving enough yarn to work last fiverows. Next row: Rep Row 1. Last 4 rows: Knit every row. Bind off loosely. Attach fringe: Hold 2 strands of fringe together and attach in each cast on and bound off stitch on ends of scarf as follows: insert crochet hook into stitch, fold strands in half over hook, pull loop through fabric then pull ends of strands through loop on hook, and tighten knot. Trim fringe to desired length. If necessary, lightly block scarf between damp towels, gently pulling on ends of scarf to "set" drop stitches.
