About the Toasty, twisty, tweedy cowl

Tori says: My parents went to Iceland, and came back with some beautiful skeins of Lettlopi for me. I wanted to make something to combine the colors of the four skeins, and I thought: a cowl. I wanted a pattern that could work from both sides, and was quite happy when I found this tweedy, slip stitch pattern. Just for fun, I decided to twist it too.

Size:

The cowl is 22cm/8,6" wide, circumference is 112cm/44

Materials:

Less than one skein of four different colors of Lettlopi (Lopi light). (Il had 9 g left of the brown and the yellow skein (C1 and C4), 12 g left of the red and green skein(C2 and C3) ) Here shown in: Color 1 1401 brown Color 2 9421 green Color 3 1409 red Color49264yellow Circular needle 4mm/US 6, 60cm/24" long. 1 stitch marker

Gauge:

16 sts and 52 rounds in slip stitch pattern = 10 x 10 cm/4 X4“ Gauge is not crucial for this project.

Method and techniques:

The cowl is knit in the round, twisting the work before it is connected in the round. The result is a long cowl with a full twist that can be worn in many different ways. The slip stitch pattern creates and interesting and beautiful texture and is surprisingly simple to knit.

Cowl instructions

With C1 cast on 180 sts. Join in the round, making sure to twist work once. Place stitch marker. Round 1 and 3: knit Round 2 and 4: purl (Alternating knit and purl rounds makes a garter stitch edge) Cut yarn Repeat these four rounds with C2, C3 and C4, cut yarn after each color. Start slip stitch pattern according to chart. The set up round (knit) is worked in C1. Change color after first round, then every 2nd round. (lf you don't cut the yarn after each color, you'll get a line on the "wrong side" of the cowl, and you risk a little mess with the four skeins. If you do cut the yarn, you'll save some time not having to untangle your yarn, but you'll have to do a lot of weaving in in the end. It's your choice. ) Work till you have used each color eight times in the slip stitch pattern. Cut yarn. Change to C1. Round 1 and 3: knit Round 2 and 4: purl Cut yarn Repeat these four rounds with C2, C3 and C4. Bind off loosely with C4.

Finishing

Weave in ends as invisibly as you can. Wash and block. Wear as you wish.

Modifications

The Léttlopi yarn comes in a lot of beautiful colors, so there are almost endless possibilities. Find your favorite color combination! Omit the twisting if you wish (This will make your knitting go a little smoother, especially if you prefer not cutting the yarn after each color) Make the cowl broader, shorter, longer as you prefer. Remember to cast on a multiple of three stitches. Abbreviations: K = knit C = color st/sts = stitch/stitches
