Sundara
This Hindi inspired cabled turban is constructed with two simple knitted pieces; a cabled band and a smaller stockinette stitch piece that is used to create the knot in the center. It fits a 20-22" circumference head and measures 1o" in diameter when laying flat. This headband is sure to keep your ears warm and convey sundara, or "beauty" in Hindi. Materials: 110 yards of handspun alpaca in dk weight (or any wool in a dkweight) Us 6 needles Cable needle
Gauge:
7 stitches and 8 rows= 1" in cable pattern \*Note stitch gauge is not imperative for this pattern. However, row gauge is crucial to ensure that the headband will fit around the head properly. Terminology: c4f = slip the first 4 stitches off of the needle and hold them in the front of your work with a cable needle, knit the next 4 stitches, and then knit the 4 stitches from your cable needle Rs = right side Ws = wrong side Directions: For cabled band 1. Co 35 stitches and follow stitch pattern. row 1 (Rs)- k2, pl, k2, pl, k8, p2, k3,p2,k8, pl,k2, pl, k2 row 2 (ws) - p2, kl, p2, kl, p8, k2, p3, k2, p8, kl, p2, kl, p2 2. Repeat these two rows 6 more times. 3. The next row (row 15 and always on a RS row) you will cable. k2,pl, k2, pl, c4f, p2,k3, p2,c4f, pl,k2,pl, k2 4. Starting with a ws row, continue to follow the stitch pattern for 19 more rows and cable on row 20. 5. Repeat the previous 20 rows until you have done the cable row a total of six times. 7. Then continue pattern for l4 more rows and bind off. For center band 1.Co 20 stitches and knit in stockinette stitch till piece measure 2". Finishing The cabled band should measure 5" in width and 18" in length. Seam together the cabled band from the cast on edge to the bind off edge with the right side facing (cables) on the outside.(see photo right)

Next, turn the band insideout so the wrong side is facing you. Hold the center band (small stockinette piece) vertically and wrap around the seam of the cabled band. Seam both sides of the center band. The center band should hug the cabled band at its seam creating a cinched look. (see photo right) Weave in all endsand enjoy!
