Heartwarmer
A cowl fit for a toddler by Dani Thompson

Materials:
Yarn: 90 - 150 yards dk or light worsted weight yarn Needles: US 6 / 4mm circular needle (100cm or longer) alt: 16"circ and/or dpns Notions: 8 stitch markers (10 if using dpns), tapestry needle
Sizing:
Instructions are given for size 1-2 years with size 2-4 and 5-6 years in parentheses
Gauge:
22 st/4 inches (adjust needle size if necessary to get gauge)
Pattern notes:
I have suggested using the magic loop method with one half of stitches on each side, the splits make front and back markers. The beginning of the round is the mid back of the neck. If using another method be sure to somehow mark the beginning of the round, and the halfway point (mid front)

To begin:
CO 68 (72, 8o) stitches and join to knit in the round, being careful not to twist ? Place the stitches exactly in half for magic loop method. If using dpns pm at the beginning of round (mid back) and the halfway point (mid front) - 34, (36, 40) st Rounds 1 - 6: knit Suggestion: if you would prefer the neck not to roll, knit the first 4 rounds in moss stitch as follows: Rounds 1 and 3: k1, p1 around Rounds 2 and 4: p1, k1 around
Begin short row shaping for neckline as follows:
Round 7: Knit 7, W+T (WS) Purl 14, W+T (RS) Knit to wrapped st, pick up wrap and knit it together with wrapped stitch, k7, W+T (WS) Purl to wrapped st, pick up wrap and purl it together with wrapped stitch, p7, W+T Continue in this manner until there are fewer than 7 stitches before mid front, ending with a purl row. (RS) Knit to end of round, picking up any wraps as you go.
Continue knitting in the round:
On the following round pick up the 2 remaining wraps. piece measures 2 (3, 3.5) inches from CO edge at mid front (halfway point) Suggestion: this is the best place to customise the length of the collar for the neck of the child you are knitting for. Children come in all sorts of wonderful shapes and sizes
Raglan increases:
Set up round: Knit 12 (12, 14), pm, k2, pm, k6 (8, 8), pm, k2, pm, k24 (24, 28), pm, k2, pm, k6 (8, 8), pm, k2, pm, k12 (12, 14) Round 1: (increase round): k to marker, \*M1R, sm, K2, sm, M1L, k to next marker. Repeat from \* to end Round 2: knit Repeat rounds 1 and 2 - 3 (4, 5) more times Repeat round 1 - 1 more time. You now have 108 (120, 136) st altogether
Work short rows back and forth from mid back to form back bib:
Row 1: Knit until 2 st are left before first marker, W+T Row 2: Purl until 2 stitches are left before next raglan marker, W+T Row3: Knit until 2 st are left before wrapped st, W+T Row 4: Purl until 2 st are left before wrapped st, W+T Repeat rows 3 and 4 - 2 (3, 3) more times. After the last turn, knit back to the mid back Note: you'll know you're doing this correctly because the stitches make a pattern, with every other stitch being a wrapped st. (RS) Knit across to the front mid line, picking up the wraps as they appear. Make sure you somehow mark the mid front (I had my stitches separated here for the magic loop method, if you are using dpns, you need to place a marker here)
Work short rows back and forth to form front bib:
Repeat Rows 1-4 and then continue with rows 3 and 4, as for the back, this time until there are only 2 stitches left before the mid front marker on each side Knit across to the beginning of the round (mid back), picking up the wraps as they appear. Knit one more round, picking up wrapped stitches Now knit moss st for 2 rounds as follows: Round 1: \*k1, p1\* repeat to end Round 2: \*p1, k1\* repeat to end

BO off loosely Blocking is recommended to minimise curling
Glossary:
p:purl BO: bind off pm: place marker CO: cast on RS: right side dpns: double pointed needles st: stitch(es) k: knit WS: wrong side
