YARN + NOTIONS
Needles:
· A pair of 3.5mm straight knitting needles (US 4) · Two 3.5mm double pointed needles (DPNs) to make the legs (US 4)
Notions:
· 2 x 6mm black buttons for the eyes, a small amount of yellow felt fabric, a sewing needle and thread Toy filling (less than 50g) · A darning or tapestry needle to sew the knitted pieces together · 4 x 30cm long pipe cleaners (or chenille stems) for the legs Note: As the pipe cleaners may have sharp ends, this toy will not be suitable for babies or young children.
Yarn:
DK weight yarn, and less than 40g:

Black: Robin DK in "Black" 044 White: Robin DK in "White" 040 The yarn used was sold in 100g skeins, and one skein will be more than sufficient to knit your spider. You will only need a 60cm length of white yarn to embroider the mouth.

NOTES
Finished size: The spider is approximately 12cm tall and 13cm wide (when standing with the legs bent). Work flat: All pieces are knitted flat (back and forth) on a pair of straight knitting needles, apart from the legs which are i-cord knitted on two DPNs. Tension: The tension is approximately 22 sts x 28 rows for a 10cm x 10cm square in stockinette stitch on 3.5mm needles. Don't worry too much about tension for this pattern. Casting on: Unless otherwise specified, I prefer to use the long tail cast on for all pieces. Sewing seams: Use mattress stitch to sew the seams.

Spider Legs
Note, I have wrapped the spider's pipe cleaner legs with knitted i-cord pieces. If you prefer you can just use pipe cleaners without the i-cord covering. Make 8. Cast on 5 sts in black on a 3.5mm DPN. Using two DPNs, make an i-cord piece 10cm long for each leg. Break the yarn and thread the yarn tail onto a darning needle and sew through the 5 sts on the knitting needle. Pull the sts off the knitting needle on to the yarn, but don't pull the yarn tight as the pipe cleaners are going to be inserted into this opening at the end for each leg.
MAKinG UP
Head and body: Starting at the cast off sts at the top of the body, sew the side edges together, adding stuffing as you sew. This seam runs down the centre back of the body. Finish by gathering the cast on sts together at the base. Legs: The legs are pipe cleaners that are covered by the knitted icord legs. If you do not want to use pipe cleaners, you can simply sew the end of each leg to the base of the spider to give him dangly legs. To make the spider with pipe cleaner legs: Step 1: To make it easier to push the pipe cleaner through the body, thread it onto a darning needle first. Thread one Step 2: Push the needle through the base of the spider body, from one side to the other, so that there is a pipe cleaner leg on either side of the body. Repeat with three more pipe cleaners, so that you have four pipe cleaner legs on each side of the body. Step 3: With the pipe cleaner on the darning needle, bring the needle up through the centre of an i-cord leg, starting at the open cast off end of the i-cord piece. Pull the pipe cleaner out of the end of the i-cord (don't worry if the pipe cleaner is longer than the i-cord leg, you will trim the pipe cleaner later). Repeat this step with all the legs.

Step 4: Now sew the cast off end of the i-cord onto the body to keep it in place. When all the legs are sewn on, trim the ends of the pipe cleaners so that they are the same length as the i-cord pieces, and bend the legs into shape. At the base of the spider, the legs pass through the bottom of the body in the direction shown by the red arrows

Eyes: Cut a figure eight shape in yellow felt fabric and sew two 6mm diameter black buttons on top of this felt piece on the front of the head for the eyes. Mouth: Using white yarn, embroider a big smile onto the front of the head below the eyes.
