Rainbow Striped Sweater
by Juanita Albro

This sweater uses 9 colors of Knitted Wit's Gumballs -- mini skeins of sock yarn. I wanted my colors to blend together so this is what resulted. (sorry about the million ends to weave in.) At this time there's just this size, which is 20 inch diameter around the chest, 11 inches from top of shoulder to hem, with 5 3%4 inch long sleeves (measured along underarm seam). 10 colors used in sample (my best guess at Knitted Wit's color names): Color 1 A Madge (red-violet) Color 2 B Wild Orchid (light violet) Color 3 C Honey Lavender (blue purple) Color 4 D Green Color 5 E My Boyfriend's Sweatshirt/Sweater (seen it labeled both ways) (olivey green) Color 6 F Salted Caramel (dark gold) Color 7 G Orange Color 8 H Red Color 9 J Black Magic (Dark red, used for trim) Gauge: 25 sts and 34 rows to 4 inches

Directions:
In Color A, cast on 100 sts, join in the round, being careful not to twist. Place marker to indicate beginning of row. Row 1 (Set-up row): K 22 sts, pm (marker 1), k 28 sts, pm (marker 2), K22 sts, pm (marker 3), k22 sts (should be 6 sts before beg of round marker, marker 4), wrap and turn, and begin short rows: Short row 2: p 16 sts, stopping 6 sts before m3. Wrap and turn. Short row 3: k 19 sts, working wrapped stitch with wrap, wrap and turn. Short row 4: p 22 sts, wrap and turn. Short row 5: k to beg of round marker (marker 4), working wraps with wrapped stitch when come to them. Slip beg of round marker. Row 2: \*Kfb, k to 2 sts before marker 1, kfb, k1, sl m, repeat from \* 3 more times (4 times total). Row 3: k 1 row even, slipping markers as you come to them. Row 4: Switch to color B, repeat Row 2 (Row 2 is the increase row). Row 5: Switch to color A, repeat Row 3 (knit even). The pattern going forward is summed up in the following table. There is one row in the table for every row you knit. Every row is either an increase row (just like Row 2) or an “even" row (just like Row 3). The “Number of rows in color" column tells you how many rows in a row will be in the same color. It only gets filled in on the row where you switch colors. Rows 4 and 5 are repeated in the table so you can compare them with the written description above.
Row Number | Color | # of Rows in a row in same color | Increase (row 2) or work even (row 30 | Number of stitches at end of row |

After Row 32, you are going to put the sleeve stitches on a holder or scrap yarn. Row 33: Put stitches between the beg of row marker and marker 1 on a stitch holder or scrap yarn, removing marker 1 (leave beg of row marker). Knit stitches between marker 1 and marker 2 in Color D. Put stitches between marker 2 and marker 3 on a stitch holder or scrap yarn, removing markers 2 and 3. Knit stitches that were between marker 3 and beg of round marker in Color D, slip beg of rowmarker.(Whew!) Now you're working on the body, and all the rows are worked even. Time for another table, one table rowfor every rowyouknit:

Row 4: k the k sts and p the purl sts, sm when you get to them. Row 5: Repeat Row 3, except don't move the beg of round marker when you come to it at the end of the row. This next row is a little bit of a tricky row. I cross the cables a last time as I bind off, because I liked the neck edge better that way. If this seems too complicated, try Alternate Rows 6 and 7. Row 6: You will bind off as you work this row. P the p sts, but c4 the k sts. This means after you work the cable, you'll put the sts back on your left hand needle so you can bind them off. Alternate Row 6: \*\*p1,\*c4, p2, repeat from \* 3 more time, p1, sm, p1, \*c4, p2, repeat from \* 2 more times, p1, sm. Repeat once more from \*\*. Alternate Row 7: Bind off in pattern. Kitchener together the underarm seams, weave in the (million) ends, block, and enjoy! This is a pattern written by Juanita Albro, this pattern is free but for personal use only.
