Abbreviations
ch - chain st / sts - stitch / stitches sk - skip stitches sl - slip stitch tr - treble htr - half treble Notes: Mitts - ch2 at beginning of each row counts as a tr. Cluster Stitch - yarn round hook and pull through stitch like you were going to do a treble, yarn round hook and pull through 1st 2 loops, leaving 2 loops on the hook, now yarn round hook again and pull through, yarn round hook and pull through 1st 2 loops, you should have 3 loops on the hook, yarn round hook and pull through all 3 loops on hook. Cluster stitch done. The cluster is worked in every other stitch on row 2 but when you get to row 3 the cluster is worked in each of the ch1 spaces between the clusters. I have designed the mitts using my own hand size and wanted a loose fit. I would suggest if you have small hands or prefer a tighter fit that you alter the pattern by reducing the initial chain in 2 stitches at a time. The overall mitt measures 4.5" across. Just remember that if you reduce the number of chains in the beginning you will have 1 less cluster per 2 chains. The same goes with the boot cuff which measures approximately 13" round but this will stretch a little when worn. If you prefer to increase the size just chain 2 extra sts per cluster. I had a small amount of yarn left over using my pattern below. If you wish to change the sizes as noted above you may not have enough yarn to complete both mitts and boot cuffs. Mitts - make 2 Chain 32 Row 1: starting in the 2nd chain from hook, work a htr into each st to end, turn. Row 2: ch2, tr1 in same st, \*ch1, sk1, cluster in next st\*, repeat from \* - \* to last 2 sts, ch1, sk1, tr1 in last st, turn - you should have 14 clusters. Row 3: ch2, tr1 in the ch1 space, \*ch1, cluster\*, repeat to last 2 sts, ch1, sk1, tr1 in last st, turn. Row 4 - 7: repeat row 3. Row 8: ch2, tr1 in the ch1 space, \*ch1, cluster\* 5 times, ch9, skip the next 4 chain 1 spaces. \*cluster, ch1\* 5 times, tr1 in last st, turn - The ch9 forms the gap for your thumb. Row 9: ch2, tr1 in the ch1 space, \*ch1, cluster\* 4 times, ch1. You should now be at the ch9 section from the previous row. Starting in the 1st st of the ch9 section work \* cluster, ch1, sk1\* 5 times. You should now be at the next ch1 space, work \*cluster, ch1\* 5 times, tr1 in last st, turn. You should have 14 clusters. Row 10: repeat row 3. Row 11: ch1, \*htr1 in ch1 space, htr1 in to top of cluster\* repeat to end. Finishing Left hand - fold in half and match up the row ends, work 2 sc in each row end and just 1 sc in the last row end. Fasten off and weave in ends. Right hand - Fasten off at the end of row 11 and weave in ends. Fold the mitt in half and turn over so the thumb opening is on the left as you look at it,rejoin yarn starting at the bottom, match up the row ends and work sc1 in 1st row end, then sc2 in each row end. When you reach the top i.e: row 11 ends, work sc1 then a slip st. Fasten off and weave in ends. Boot Cuffs - make 2 Chain 37 and slip stitch into 1st chain to form a ring being careful not to twist the chain. Row 1: Ch2, htr into every st around, sl st to close into initial ch2. Row 2: Ch1, work a cluster in the same st, \*ch1, sk1, cluster\* repeat from \* - \* to end. Slip st into top of the 1st cluster to finish round. Row 3: As with the mitts you are now working a cluster into each ch1 space around. sl st into next ch1 space, ch1, cluster in same ch1 space. \*ch1, cluster\* all the way around, ch1 and sl st into top of 1st cluster. Rows 4 - 8: repeat row 3. ): ch1, \*htr1 in ch1 space, htr1 in to top of cluster\* repeat to end. Fasten off and weave in ends. Block using which ever method you prefer and enjoy.
