Pattern illustration

An excellent beginner level knitting project in stockinette stitch, using two colors, single rib, and simple increases. Combing different colors, variegations, or yarn fibers to makg attractive & super fun ! Yarn: You will need 2 balls of yarn in DK weight, one each of two colors, a Main Color (MC) and a Contrast Color (CC). Substitute sport or worsted-weight yarn, in any fiber content, and needles accordingly, for bigger or smaller pair of mitts. Gauge: 6 stitches and 10 rows = 1 inch (approximate). Needles: US 4 - 3.50mm , or size to get gauge. Measures: 6.5 - 7" circumference at palm, 8 - 9 " length. Size: One size to fit womens medium / mens small. For smaller mitts, use finer yarn and smaller needles to get 7-8 sts = 1". For larger, use thicker yarn and larger needles to get 5 -6 sts = 1". Other materials: Tapestry needle, markers.

Begin \*

You will not cut either color yarn while knitting from beginning to end, but to take up the previous color and switch out each row. t on 44 stitches, place end-of-round, and join together to work in-the-rounc ork rib in a \*knit 1, purl 1\* pattern for 9 rounds, or until desired width of rib Switch to CC and knit 1 round, and back again to MC for 1 round, alternating each color for 37 rounds ending having knit a CC round. Mitts are approx. 9 " in length from top to bottom. If you'd like them shorter, simply begin the next step after fewer rows. In MC, place markers for the thumb gusset as follows: 1 stitches, place marker, knit 2 stitches, place marker, knit 21 stitches to end In CC, work decrease round as follows: knit up to first marker, slip marker, M1R, knit up to second marker, M1L (see below for M1R & M1L). 2 stitches increased. M1R: Lift the stitch beneath the next stitch (it will be in CC) on to the needle, knit into it (creating a right-leaning increase) then knit the next stitch. M1L: Lift the stitch beneath the last stitch you just knit (it will be in CC) on to the needle, knit into it (creating a left-leaning increase) then knit the next stitch. Continue to increase every other round inside of gusset markers, on the CC round, until you have 16 gusset stitches inside of the two gusset markers. Continue with NO increases inside of the gusset markers for 5 more rounds, ending having just knit in in MC. On the next CC round, knit around up to the first gusset marker, remove marker, and place all 16 of the thumb gusset stitches on to a piece of waste yarn or a holder, then remove second gusset marker. Bridge 2 stitches across: In CC, cast on two stitches with backward loop with working yarn on the right needle thereby adding 2 stitches to bridge across hand totaling 44 stitches, continue around to end. Proceed by alternating colors for 11 more rounds, ending having knit a MC round. In MC rib with \*knit 1, purl 1\* for 6 rounds, or until desired width of rib. Bind off.

X Thumb

Transfer stitches from the holder (they will be in MC), and pick up and mount two loops from edge of knitted bridge across the hand (you can fudge this, trying for main color, but any picked up stitch loop will work), creating 2 more stitches for a total of 18 thumb stitches. In MC rib \*knit 1, purl 1\* for 6 rounds, or desired width of rib. Bind off. Weave in loose ends. Give your mitts a nice gentle soak in warm water with liquid wool soap for about 20 minutes. Rinse. Press excess water out between dry towels and dry flat.
