Notes:

In my quest for Dutch fisherman's sweaters I came across the ” Itse Muts" from the Dutch island of Marken. In the Dutch Open Air Museum in Arnhem (Nederlands Openluchtmuseum, Arnhem) they still have some of those old fishermans hats from about 1900. It is said that the fishermen from Marken went ashore on Hitland (old name for Shetland) while away for fishing and traded there for knitwear like hats, socks and mittens etc. They used to wear those hats summer and winter. In winter the hat would have an innerhat in one or two colors. So because my sock will not have an innersock I decide to name this sock Summer on Hitland. Watching more careful at those hats, it's clear the hats are knitted in fair isle motifs. Always two colors at a time. And its actually very funny to find out that those hats are still being knitted. Now called long hats and keps according to size and model.

Material:

Needles 2,25 mm. About 100 gr. of solid or semi solid sock yarn. The Fair Isle motives are knitted with four colours. Of course you' re free to choose any colours you like. But remember you need a main colour

(MC), of which you will need about 50 gr. The heel and the toe are knitted in MC, and the MC is also used in the two-coloured cuff.

Gauge:

In pattern: 34 st. and 34 rows = 10 x 10 cm. (unblocked) Stockinet: 30 st. and 40 rows = 10 x 10 cm. (unblocked)

Pattern: Row 1 till 6: knit in MC, squares in colour 3. The next square pattern (next 6 rows) knit with colour 3 and squares in colour 4. Next part of the pattern (row 13 till 29) with the big cross, knit with colour 4 besides the inner 5 rows that are knitted with colour 2/ colour 3/ colour 2. The cross is knitted with MC.

Cast on:

60 st. with MC and needles 2.25 mm. and divide the stitches equally on 3 or 4 needle Cuff/ Leg: Chart at the end of this pattern. Knit the cuff with two colours. The main colour (MC) and colour 2. \*K1, P1 \* 20 Rows. Knit with colour 2 and purl with MC. In the chart it is visible that the two coloured parts of the cuff pattern are each time divided by two rows in Mc. Start knitting the heel preferably after row 12 of the chart. In that way you can pick up the stitches in just one colour after knitting the heel and continue the pattern on the instep.
