This pattern is based on a classic Estonian pattern Sofia Kiri. The scarf is knit using modern approach: the center is knit first starting with provisional cast on, then the lace edging is added to both ends of the center section. Finished size: About 10 inches wide and 54 inches long, relaxed after blocking. Yarn: One skein of Misti Alpaca Lace solids in natural (#100), 437 yards OR any other lace yarn (about 450yards) Needles: Size US 2 (2.75) straight or circular. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain correct gauge. Notions: Smooth cotton waste yarn, size C (2.75 mm or $3\,\mathsf{m m}$ ) crochet hook, two stitch markers. Gauge: 29 sts and 34 rows over Chart B pattern $=4$ inches relaxed after blocking. STITCHGUIDE 5-stitch Nupp (pronounced "noop" like in "soup"): Working VERY loosely, work (k1, yo, k1, yo, k1) all in the same stitch on right side of the work - 5 nupp sts made from 1 st. On the following row (ws, purl row), purl the 5 nupp sts tog - 5 nupp sts are decreased to back to 1 st. 7-stitch Nupp: Working VERY loosely, work (k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1) all in the same stitch on right side of the work - 7 nupp sts made from 1 st. On the following row (Ws, purl row), purl the 7 nupp sts tog - 7 nupp sts are decreased to back to 1 st. Garter stitch: Knit on both RS and WS of the work. Stocking stitch: Knit on RS of the work and purl on WS of the work. Bind-off (BO) or k2tog BO: worked with two strands of yarn held together. Slip the first st, knit the second st, \*knit these 2 sts together by inserting the left-hand needle into the front from left to right and knitting them tog through back loops with the right needle. Knit the next st, repeat from \* until all the sts are secured. Cut the working yarn leaving ample tail and pull up the last loop to secure the end of the bind-off sts. NOTE Slip the first st of each row as if to purl with yarn in front, except for the first st of the first row in the center section, which is worked as k1. CENTER RECTANGLE With cotton waste yarn and crochet hook, cast on 59 sts using crochet CO, make a few extra crochet chains and make a knot to identify the end. With the working yarn knit 1 row. Turn and work rows 1-8 of Chart A, reading odd rows from right to left. On even rows, maintain garter st for first and last 5 sts of each row (see note). Work rows 1-32 of Chart B 8 times, then rows 1-28 of Chart B once. Work rows 1-3 rows ofChart C. Knit next row (wrong side) increasing 1 st between garter st section and a center section on each end of work (61 sts). Knit 2 more rows maintaining the garter st. UPPEREDGE With right side of the work facing work 19 rows of the Edge Chart. BO using 2 strands of yarn (see stitch guide).
LOWER EDGE
Carefully undo the provisional cast on and pick up life stitches: there are 58 sts. With right-side facing, join the working yarn and knit 1 row increasing 1 st between each of the garter sections and center panel and one in the middle of the work (61 sts). Knit one more row. Work the Edge Chart and BO as described for the upper edge.
