Frozen Leaves
I made this wide rectangular scarf as a present for my sister in law Faye. It used two of my favourite Estonian stitch patterns combined together. Here I used a fairly chunky yarn and large needles but this garment would work well with a variety of yarns and needle sizes - you simply need to remember to add extra repeats as desired in the lace charts. Both stitch patterns use a 10 + 17 stitch format so it is easy to adjust the sizing. This garment would also be good for using up little leftovers from previous projects held together to give texture and colour. Materials: I used 4 x 50 grams grams of yarn that had a total length of 125 metres per skein. It was marked as Category 4 in the international yarn code. The tension is unimportant really in this project so its suitable to use a variety of yarn and needle sizes.
NOTIONS
I used 1 pair each of 6.5 and 8.00 mm (Us 10.5 and 12) straight needles, 1 tapestry needle to darn in any loose ends. The larger needle was only used to cast on and cast off and also to graft the two pieces of the scarf together. For best results you will need to know how to perform double loop cast on, Kitchener stitch or 3 needle bind off. Instructions for these can be readily found on www.youtube.com or other knitting sites/reference books.
Tension/Gauge
This is largely unimportant so I am not going designate one as it will depend on the yarn that you are using but my garment measured 15" wide x 80" in length UNBLOCKED. You MAY wish to block the scarf depending on the yarn you are using to give a better finish. It is up to you how long you wish to knit it. The yarn I used was Ice Yarns Petalo Alpaca which had a high synthetic content and mohair type appearance and was totally unsuitable for blocking.
Method: Make TWO identical pieces
Using 8.00 mm needles and two strands of yarn held together - I used double loop method cast on to give a nice loose edge -loosely cast on 37 stitches. Change to 6.5 mm needles and complete the 16 Rows of Chart A Border Pattern once, then work the 16 rows of Chart B Birch Leaf Pattern a total of 9 times (or desired length). Leave stitches on a spare needle and do not cast off. Once both identical pieces of the scarf have been worked either graft them together using Kitchener stitch (or a 3 needle bind off depending on the type of yarn you are using and its flexibility) using the 8 mm needle. Block as desired depending again depending on the yarn used and most of all I hope you enjoy not only making it but wearing it too. There are many other patterns of mine to be found on my own website and also www.ravelry.com/people/woolhunter and they are all free and do not require any purchase of my own yarns. you to Linda Sillence who modelled the Frozen Leaves Garment for me!
