Gauge:

6 x 9 stitches = 2"x 2"
Instructions:
Hat:
1. Cast on 80 stitches using cast on of your choice using smaller size needles. 2. Follow chart switching to larger size needles at beginning of row 4 (after ribbing). 3. Repeat row 20 until hat measures 5.5" from cast on edge. 4. Begin decreasing according to chart using an SsK for each decrease. 5. When 4 stitches remain, break yarn and pass through live stitches to close. 6. Block hat and wait to completely dry. I took my hat a little over two days to dry during blocking.
Horns:
1. Place a marker four stitches right and 6 stitches up from right tip of Ecru arrow on front. 2. Place a marker four stitches left and 6 stitches up from left tip of Ecru arrow on front. 3. Working one horn at a time: a. Using size 4 double pointed needles, pick up 16 stitches in a diamond formation around marker. b. Starting at the corner closest to the Camel arrow, knit off double pointed needles onto size 10.5 needles. C. Remove center stitch marker. d.Knit 5 rows. e. K2tog, knit until second to last stitch, SK (decrease 2 stitches). f。Knit. g.Repeat steps 3.e & 3.f until 2 stitches remain, stopping to stuff periodically. h. Break yarn and pass through live stitches to close.
Notes:
Pattern is a chart variation of Racebending.com's Appa Hat (http:/www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/appa-hat---racebending) Photo pages are purely for reference, they are not needed for the pattern. I did rows 8 -> 12 of chart using intarsia in the round. See photos for demonstration of how I increased the arrow while doing so. Using a K2tog for the hat decreases results in the wrong color stitch on top when decreasing a previously Ecru into Camel stitch. For a child's size hat, cast on 60 stitches and omit sections C and G. Knit until hat measures 4" from cast on edge and for the horns, knit knit 4 rows instead of 6 and skip the knit round 3.f. Note: This has not been test knit, but extrapolated based on measurements. Use Camel as Ecru and 9416 - Blue Hawaii as the Camel and omit the horns for Aang in the Avatar state.
