Hallows
This hat is inspired by the hat worn by Hermione Granger in the Godrics Hollow scenes of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I. The hat is
Size:
21" around, 7" from brim to tip
Materials:
Yarn: 2 skeins Miski Baby Llama (82 yards) Needles: Size 7 circulars. You can do this pattern on small circulars, magic loop or double pointed needles.

Key:
MS: (Make Star) Insert right needle, wrap yarn and pull through as if to purl three together, but do not drop stitches off the left needle. Next, wrap your yarn around your right needle clockwise. Then purl the three stitches on the left needle together again, this time Working the stitch completely. You should have three stitches on your right needle. Inc 1>5: make 1 purlwise (lifted increase), purl 1, make 1 purlwise, turn; slip 1, knit 2, turn; slip 1, m1p, p1, m1p, p Dec 5>1: Slip 3 purlwise, p2tog, pass the 3 slipped stitches over the p2tog Note: this pattern is knit inside out. If you prefer to work with the outside facing you so you can see the pattern, I recommend you learn to knit "backwards."
Instructions
Cast on 80 stitches and join for working in the round, whichever technique you prefer. Work 1-2" of 1x1 ribbing ( kl, p1 across)
Increases
Increase 1 Row 1: (p1, ms) around (80 stitches) Row 2: (p 16, Inc 1>5, p3) four times (96 stitches) Row 3: sl 2, (pl, ms) around. You will be "borrowing" the stitches at the end of each needle (for DPNs and magic loop) to make the star. The stitches you slip at the begining of the round will be used to make the last star. Row 4: p around, returning the borrowed stitches to their original needles and returning the last two stitches to the beginning of the next round. Continue as written, increasing every row 2 as follows: Increase 2: p8, (Inc 1>5, p 23) three times, Inc 1>5, p15 (112 stitches) Increase 3: (p24, Inc 1>5, p3) four times (128 stitches) Increase 4: (p28, Inc 1>5, p3) four times (144 stitches) (the increases are staggared on the second increase to better hide them in the pattern) Work in Star Stitch as follows until hat is 5-6" from cast on: Row 1: (pl, ms) around Row 2: p around Row 3: sl 2, (p1, ms) around. You will be "borrowing the stitches at the end of each needle (for DPNs and magic loop) to make the star. The stitches you slip at the begining of the round will be used to make the last star. Row 4: p around, returning the borrowed stitches to their original needles and returning the last two stitches to the beginning of the next round. End with a row 4.

Decrease Row 1: (p31, Dec 5>1) around (128 stitches) Work rows 3, 4 and 1 of Star pattern as written. Decrease Row 2: (p27, Dec 5>1) around (112 stitches) Work rows 3, 4 and 1 of Star pattern as written. Decrease Row 3: (p23, Dec 5>1) around (96 stitches) Work rows 3, 4 and 1 of star pattern as written Decrease Row 4: (p 19, Dec 5>1) around (80 stitches) Work row 3 of Star pattern as written Decrease Row 5: (p15, Dec 5>1) around (64 stitches) Work row 3, 4 and 1of Star pattern again as written Decrease Row 6: (p1, p3tog) around (32 stitches) Work Row 3 of Star pattern again as written Decrease Row 8: p2tog around (8 stitches) Break yarn and draw through remaining stitches.
