Elesant Simplicity
A cuff-sown sock pattern for the besinnins knitter By Kay Compton @ 2011

I designed this pattern for my husband who wanted a pair of handmade socks. I didn't want to knit just 'plain vanilla' socks, so I came up with this simple but elegant pattern to create some visual interest while still keeping the pattern nearly brainless.
MATERIALS:
100 gm sock yarn - any weight from light fingering to DK will work. I used a heavier weight yarn for these, because that's the yarn my husband chose. 4 DPNs or 1 9" circular needle, size US #2 (3.0mm) 2 stitch markers · 1 stitch holder 2 DPNs, size US#2 (3.0mm), for circular method
ABBREVIATIONS:
DPNs = Double Point Needles CO = cast on K(#) = Knit(that number of stitches) P(#) = Purl(that number of stitches) S(#) = Slip(that number of stitches) Purl-wise, unless otherwise directed SSK = S1, knit-wise, S1 (Purl-wise), stick left needle thru front of BOTH stitches, and K thru the back loop of Both stitches together K2Tog = Knit 2 stitches together P2Tog = Purl 2 stitches together BO = bind off
CHART:

Key: =knit = purl LEG: CO 71 stitches LOOsELY. Join by knitting first and last stitch together, being careful to not twist stitches. Place Stitch marker at beginning of round. You should now have 70 stitches. P1 \*K5 P2\* repeat from \* to \* until 6 stitches remain, then K5 P1. If you feel that you would like a bit more give in the cuff, you may P1 \*K2 P1 K2 P2\* repeat from \* to \* until 6 stitches remain, then K2 P1 K2 P1. Repeat whichever cuff you have chosen for 4 more rows, then begin to work pattern: 1. \*P1, k5,p1\* repeat from \* to \* until all stitches have been worked 2. \*p2, k4,pl\* repeat from \* to \* until all stitches have been worked 3.\*pl,kl,pl,k3,pl\* repeat from \* to \* until all stitches have been worked 4. \*p1,k2,pl,k2,p1\* repeat from \* to \* until all stitches have been worked 5.\*pl,k3,pl,kl,pl\* repeat from \* to \* until all stitches have been worked 6. \*pl,k4,p2\* repeat from \* to \* until all stitches have been worked Repeat all six rows until you have enough length for the leg, usually about 7 inches. Stop pattern at end of repeat to begin heel (this will allow an easier transition to set up for pattern on foot).
HEEL:
From stitch marker, You will work heel across 35 stitches, Place these stitches on one or 2 needles, as you prefer, for DPNs and place remaining stitches on a stitch holder. For circular knitting Place working stitches on one DPN and hold remaining stitches on circular needle. You may do whichever heel you prefer, but here are the directions for working an Eye Of Partridge heel: Heel Flap: Row 1: \*S1, K1,\* repeat from \* to \* to last remaining stitch, Kl and turn Rows 2 & 4: (and all even rows) S1, P34 and turn Row 3: S1, K2, \*S1, K1\* repeat from \* to \* across remaining stitches and turr Repeat Rows 1-4 7 times (36 rows total) Heel Turn: Row 1: K23, SSK, S1 and turn (leave rest of stitches on the needle) Row 2: P13, P2Tog, S1 and turn Row 3: K13, SSK, S1 and turn Repeat rows 2 & 3 until all stitches have been worked
FOOT:
Working on the Right Side of the work, Knit across all stitches, and then pick up 18 stitches thru slipped stitches along the left side of the Heel Flap. Place 1"t stitch marker here. Pick up one stitch from bar just before remaining stitches on stitch holder (now Instep Stitches). Knit pattern across instep stitches. Now pick up 1 stitch from bar between instep stitches and Heel Flap and place 2nd stitch marker here. Now pick up 18 stitches across right side of Heel Flap. Knit across heel and Right side of heel flap until 3 stitches before stitch marker. K2tog, K1, Purl remaining stitch together with 1st stitch of Instep pattern. Work across pattern to last stitch and Purl last stitch together with the next stitch. You will now be at the stitch marker. K1, SSK, Knit across all stitches until you reach instep again. From here, work as follows: Row 1: work pattern across instep stitches, K remaining stitches until last 3 stitches before stitch marker. K2tog, K1 1 across instep stitches, K1, SSK, knit across remaining stitches to stitch marker Repeat this until you have 35 stitches remaining on heel side (now Sole of Foot). At this point, you will Knit all 35 stitches across sole of foot and work pattern on Instep stitches until foot is desired length less 1 1/2 inches.
TOE:
Begin decreases for Toe as follows: Row 1: K1, SSK, Knit until 3 stitches from Stitch Marker, K2Tog, K1, K1, SSK, Knit until 3 stitches from Stitch Marker, K2Tog, K1, Row 2: Knit across all stitches Repeat these two rows until you have 13 stitches remaining on each needle.
