When In Scotland: A Knitting Pattern Inspired by Outlander's Claire Randall

When In Scotland

pattern by Rilana Riley-Munson

This shawl was inspired by the one that Claire Randall wears in the Outlander TV series on Starz. (Saturdays, 9 PM) The original shawl was made in three colors. I chose to do mine with only two. This shawl isn't an exact replica, but inspired by, Or rather my "take" on it. I named this pattern "When In Scotland," as a play on the phrase "When in Rome.." Claire has time-traveled to a different time. When stuck in Scotland in the early 1740's, you dress and act like the locals, as much as possible. This shawl is easily customize-able. You can use as many colors as you wish. Stripe it, solid color, rainbow, whatever. You can also make the shawl larger by continuing the increases on every right side row. If you choose to make the shawl larger, you will need more yarn.

Helpful Notes:

Use a "removeable marker" or safety pin to mark the right side of the shawl. It will make it easier to keep track, as Garter Stitch looks pretty much the same on both sides.

Finished Size:

Approximately 44" in width and 20" in height, measured at the center "spine." This measurement is taken while laying flat on a table. Also unblocked.

Level:

Intermediate Yarn: Any worsted weight yarn is suitable. I used 2 skeins of Lion Brand Wool Ease in "mushroom" and 1 skein of Knit Picks Brava Worsted in "currant." Estimates for yardage are between 300-400 yards for the shown shawl.

Gauge:

Gauge is not critical.

Needles:

US # 10 (6 mm) 40"+ circular needle.

Notions:

Yarn needle 1 removable marker for marking the right side of the shawl Two regular stitch markers for marking the center spine of the shawl.

You may use any weight yarn for this shawl. Make sure you use needles that are at least two times larger than what the ball band calls for. The yardage will be different with different yarns, adjust accordingly. This shawl is knit entirely in Garter Stitch. No purling.

I have been a huge fan of the Outlander books since I read the first novel back in 1998. I am thrilled with the TV series. It is fun to watch the adaptation of Jamie and Claire on the screen. I love, love, love Outlander. I made this shawl free for any and all Outlander fans to enjoy. Happy Knitting!
