One of the joys of kettle-dyed yarn is bow the semi-solid colour shimmers. The Seaforth bat is designed to showcase the subtle colour sbifts and takes just one skein. Tbe bat uses a lace stitch tbat runs over just four rounds wbich makes it a great bat pattern for any beginning lace knitter. Seaforth is named after an unbabited island in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. You'd probably need a bat if you visited!

Materials

Malabrigo Rios (100% Merino; 192 m/100g); 1 skein. Sample shown in sh. 412,"Teal Feather' Meedles & Gccessories 4mm (US 6) and 5mm (US 8) double-pointed needles.

gauge

22 sts and 28 rows of unstretched lace pattern knitted on 5mm needles measures 10 x 10 cm (4" x 4"). Siging 47cm/18.5"(52cm/20.5") = S/M (M/L). Sample shown in M/L. Yarn Sulbstitution Motes: Malabrigo Rios is a worstedweight yarn which in UK terms means a very light-weight Aran or a heavy DK. Malabrigo Rios has a great deal of drape - this makes for a great slouchy hat - and its stitch definition is very good.

Tip& & Hints:

+ Place a stitch maker after each pattern repeat if you find it difficult to keep track! + Placing a lifeline may help you if you find you are making mistakes. + The lace is quite stretchy, so the sizing is very forgiving. + After finishing, you can opt to block the hat over a plate or a bowl. This opens up the lace pattern. + You can make the hat slouchier by working another two repeats of the lace section. + Why not add a bouncy pom pom in a contrast colour?

Instuctions:

Cast on 99 (110) sts using smaller size needles. Join to knit in the round, being careful not to twist.

Riling Section:

Rnd 1: \*p2, k2, [p, k] twice, p, k2; rep from \* to end. Repeat rnd 1 another 9 times. Change to larger size needles.

&ace Section:

Rnd 11: \*p2, yo, k2, ssk, k2tog, k2, yo, k; rep from \* to end. Rnd 12: \*p2, k9; rep from \* to end. Rnd 13: \*p2, k, yo, k2, ssk, k2tog, k2, yo; rep from \* to end. Rnd 14: \*p2, k9; rep from \* to end. These four rounds form the lace section. Repeat this section another 9 times.

Crown Decreases:

Rnd 1: \*p2tog, k1, yo, k2, ssk, k2tog, k2, yo: rep from \* to end. 90 (100) sts Rnd 2: \*p1, k9; rep from \* to end. Rnd 3: \*k2tog, yo, k2, ssk, k2tog, k2, yo; rep from \* to end. 81 (90) sts Rnd 4 and all even rnds: k to end. Rnd 5: \*k3, ssk, k4; rep from \* to end. 72 (80) sts Rnd 7: \*k3, k2tog, k3; rep from \* to end. 63 (70) sts Rnd 9: \*k3, k2tog, k2; rep from \* to end.54 (60) sts Rnd 11: \*k2, ssk, k2; rep from \* to end. 45 (50) sts Rnd 13: \*k1, ssk, k2; rep from \* to end. 36 (40) sts Rnd 15: \*k1, k2tog, k1; rep from \* to end. 27 (30) sts Smaller size: k1, \*k2tog; rep from \* to end. 14 sts.
