P.E. Kelley Kilt Hose by E.A. Kelley

I wanted a masculine feel to the hose, so I chose a 3 to 1 rib pattern for the foot and leg. As to the thistles I was inspired by the father's favorite Scottish balladeer, Roger Graham, who sings a wonderful song called “Flower of Scotland". As I was browsing through a stitch dictionary looking for cables I came across the cable I chose for the pattern and was immediately reminded of one of my favorite bands, Smithfield Fair, and their rendition of Robbie Burns beautiful song “My Heart's in the Highlands". About ten years ago my family began our journey into the cult of the Scottish American. There we found a many great friends, and lots of fun. My father, in particular, found himself wholeheartedly invested in the pursuit of filling his leisure time with all the related activities. At one point I had promised him I would 1) learn to knit and 2) knit him custom kilt hose. As time tends to do, it passed and before long events of life happened and my father passed away. In the wake of this event I finally learned to knit. And so now I can finally design those kilt hose for him. So in memorial to my father I designed these kilt hose. Photo credit [model: E.A. FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Here is a list of measurements to take as well as a few equations to do before you start knitting which will give you the size and measurement of the hose. Measurements: A: ball of foot at it widest point B: length of foot, from big toe to end of heel C: around the widest part of the calf muscle

Equations: [(Measurement A) -.5] x $8{=}$ SumA [# of stitches on heel needle] ${\bf-14}\mathrm{=}\,{\bf S u m}\,{\bf B}$ [(Measurement C) x 8] - $8{=}$ Sum C It is important to periodically try on the sock as you go in order to see if it is fits.

Heel:
Cont 3 to 1 rib on needles 1 and 2 Row 1: Sl 1 knit to the end of needle 4(combining needles 3 and 4) Row 2: Turn, and slp, purl to the end Rep 2 rows until the flap is 2.5 inches long
Turning the heel:

Be sure that there is an even # of stitches left on the needle.
Joining the heel:
Knit half the stitches on the heel flap.
Pick up a needle and knit the rem stitches. Using that same needle pick up approx 12 slipped stitches along the edge as well as the one between the next needle and the last slipped stitch. Cont the 3 to 1 rib patt on the next 2 needles. On the fourth needle you will need to pick up the stitch between the last needle and the first slipped stitch. Pick up approx 12 slipped stitches along the foll edge. Using the same needle knit the rem heel flap stitches along with those you have picked up. This is the new end of the row, move marker to reflect this fact. Work one row even, cont in the 3 to 1 rib patt on what are now needles 2 and 3. Row 1: Knit the last two stitches of needle 1, k2tog. Cont with 3 to 1 rib patt on 2 and 3. SSK the first two stitches of needle 4. Row 2: work even, maintaining 3 to 1 rib. Rep these two rows until there is an equal amount of stitches on all the needles. Work one row even maintaining the 3 to 1 rib. Begin the 3 to 1 rib patt on all four needles. Work in 3 to 1 rib until the calf muscle begins, this should be approximately 6 to 8 inches.
Calf Gusset:
Knit all made stitches unless otherwise noted. R1: work to the end of the row, m1 R2: m1, work even R3: work to the end of the row, m1 R4: m1, work even R5: work to the end of the row, m1 R6: m1, work even R7: work to the end of the row, miL (purl this stitch in the next row) R8: k3, m1L, (purl this stitch in the next row) work even Cont on in this manner, creating new rib sets as you add stitches, until you have (Sum C) stitches on all 4 needles. If Sum C is less than 12o stitches, then cont working the incs for the gusset until there are 120 stitches. Then work one row even. If Sum C is more than 120 stitches, work one row even, then: R1: k2tog, work 3 to 1 rib to the last two, SSK R2: work even (purl the last stitch of the last even row you work.) Rep until you have 120 stitches.
Garter:
Cont working 3 to 1 rib until the sock is 3 inches less than where you would like the fold to be. Change to the 1 to 1 rib and cont for 3 more inches.
Decorative Cuff: Turn sock inside out
R1: Turn and Knit Even. This will change the end of row; the new end of the row will be what was needle one, move the stitch marker to reflect this fact.
