King's College Cowl Knitting Pattern: Inspired by University of Cambridge's Spectacular Fan Vaulted Ceiling

he first time I saw a picture of the spectacular fan vaulted ceiling in the chapel of the University of Cambridge's King's College, I was spellbound. If anything first kindled my passion for art history, this was it. It is a breathtaking feat of early 16th century engineering - despite being immensely heavy, the world's largest fan vault is delicate, airy, and beautifully ornate. The King's College Cowl is inspired by the expanding ribbed forms in the vault, the delicate arched support columns, and the expansive stained glass windows that make this building such a stunning work of art. This cowl is perfect for that small skein of special yarn you never know what to make with - the lace pattern knits up quickly but yields dramatic results while using very little overall yardage. The King's College Cowl pattern is both charted and written, so all knitters can feel in their element, and either version can be printed onto a single, double-sided, page (print pages 3 & 4 for charted, 5 & 6 for written). , Yarn: 151m (165 yd) light fingering weight. The yarn used in the sample is a handspun merino/silk blend varying in weight from lace to sport. Only 37 grams of the sample yarn was required; approximately 125 metres. This is your chance to use that little skein of cashmere you couldn't resist buying but couldn't find a project small enough for! Beads: 276 size 8 glass beads. If your yarn is heavier than a light fingering weight, you may want to consider using size 6 beads.

note about beaded knitting: There are two common methods of adding beads to your knitting - one is by pre-stringing the beads before casting on and slipping them into place as they are needed, the other is by using a tiny crochet hook to slip them Over individual stitches as the knitting progresses. For this project I recommend pre-stringing, as the crochet hook method can easily damage your yarn if the beads are small and don't fit comfortably over the hook.

'eedles:

US size 6 16’ circular needle, or whatever size you need to obtain gauge.

auge:

25 sts and 35 rows = 10 cm/4" in stocking stitch. It is important that you obtain the correct stitch gauge for this project (row gauge is less important) - the cowl fits close to the neck and if your gauge is too tight, the cowl won't slip over your head! Err on the size of too big, if you must err at all.
