Those mittens are heavily inspired by the Pattern "SträuBchen und Zopfchentour" found in the book "Omas Strickgeheimnisse"(Granny's Knitting Secrets) on page 51. I wanted a stitch pattern which is easily memorized and which allows you to put your knitting away and knowing exactly where you were once you are able to pick it up again - being the bloody novice to knitting that I am ;-) The mittens are knitted with a cotton yarn using four double-pointed needles. If you don't want to work with just the four dpns you can easily switch to five - you just have to adjust the count of stitches on each needle. I was much more comfortable to knit them this way because it allowed me to have the whole cable/lace pattern on just one needle. Since I am a big girl I also have much bigger hands and created the mittens to fit my oversized paws. After being asked by several people if I would write down the pattern - which was a really scaring experience all by its bloody own - I'm now also a novice to pattern writing ... So, since being the rookie here there are bound to be mistakes. If you find one or have questions then please don't hesitate to contact me. I thank you for your interest in this pattern and I hope you enjoy knitting these mittens.

Repeat pattern seven times before you work the thumb opening. If you can you can also work a thumb gusset - just adjust the pattern accordingly. Since I'm a rookie I haven't learned yet how to work a thumb gusset, all I have learned so far is this: Start first row of eigth pattern repeat. Work first needle: k 4, then using waste yarn and k 7. Slip these sts back to left needle and k them again using working yarn. Work in pattern: Needles 1 +2 areworked asbefore. Work pattern repeat to and. Add the last repeat. Then work 5 rounds in 4x2 rip pattern (see page 2) and bind off. Weave ends in.
sChumb:
Carefully remove the waste yarn and place resulting live sts on two double-point needles. There will be 7 sts below the opening and 6 sts above. Attach yarn and k the 7 sts on lower needle; using a second needle, pick up and k 2 sts in space between upper and lower needle, k first 3 sts from upper needle; using a third needle, k remaining 3 sts from upper needle and pick up and k 2 sts in space between this needle and lower needle. 17 sts. Knit for 12 rounds and bind off. Weave inEnds.
Rigbt Mitter:
The right mitten is worked with a slight change of the pattern so the lace part will point away from your thumb like it did with the left mitten. First cast on 48 sts, divide between needles: 1. Needle 14 sts, 2. Needle 20 sts, 3. Needle 14 sts Again join to begin working in the round, be careful not to twist. Place a stitchmarker to mark end of round. Now start knitting the first round in rib pattern: 1. Needle: k 2, p 2, k 4, p2, k 4 2. Needle: p 2, k4, p 2, k4, p 2, k4, p 2 3. Needle: k 4, p2, k 4, p2, k 2

Work 20 rounds in rip pattern. Then proceed like you did with the first pattern and start knitting the cable-lace pattern - with a slight change this time: Needle 1 and 3: k 14 Needle 2: 1. row: p 2, C4B, p 2, k 2, k2po, YO, p 2, C4F, p 2 2. row: p 2, k 4, p 2, k 4, p 2, k 4, p 2 3. row: p 2, k 4, p 2, k 1, k2po, Y0, k 1, p 2, k 4, p 2 4. row: p 2, k 4, p 2, k 4, p 2, k 4, p 2 5. row: p 2, k4, p 2, k2po, YO, k2, p 2, k 4, p 2 6. row: p 2, k 4, p 2, k 4, p 2, k 4, p 2

Repeat pattern seven times before you work the thumb opening. This time the opening is worked on the 3. needle! Work as follows: Start first row of eigth pattern repeat. Knit needle 1+2 according to chart and work third needle: k 3, then using waste yarn and k 7. Slip these sts back to left needle and k them again using workingyarn. Work to end and add thumb like you did for the left mitten. Weave in ends.
