RIGHT MITTEN
Cast on 48 stitches. Allocating 24 stitches to each needle, being careful not to twist, join and begin working in the round.
Cuff
Rib pattern: k2, \*p2, k4 \* repeat from \* to \* 7 times, p2, k2 Work 20 rounds in this rib pattern to complete the cuff.
Body of the hand
When knitting the right-hand mitten, the cable lace pattern for the back of the mitt is worked first in each round (think of this as being on the first needle), and the stockinette stitch for the palm of the mitt is worked next (on second needle). Round 1: k2, p2, c4b, p2, yo, k2tog, k2, p2, c4f,p2, k to end of round Rounds 2, 4, and 6: k the k stitches and p the p stitches Round 3: k2, p2, k4, p2, k1, yo, k2tog, k1 p2, k4, p2, kto end of round Round 5: k2, p2, k4, p2, k2, yo, k2tog, p2, k4, p2, k to end of round Repeat these six rounds 4 times.
Increasing for thumb gusset
At this point you will start making increases in rounds 1 and 4 of the cable-lace pattern on the left side of the glove to create the thumb gusset, all the while continuing to work the cable-lace pattern on the first needle and the stockinette pattern on the second needle. Set up round: Work 23 stitches in pattern across the first needle; m1r, pm, k1. 0n second needle, k1, pm, m1l, work in pattern to end of needle. There will now be 50 stitches on the two needles, two of them between the two markers. Work two rounds in pattern without increasing, knitting the stitches between the two markers on each round. Increase round: Work in pattern until you come to the first marker. Slip marker, M1r, k to second marker, m1l, slip marker, work in pattern to the end of the round. Continue increasing in this manner every three rounds (increases are always done in rounds 1 and 4 of the cable-lace pattern) until 8 complete cable-lace patterns have been worked, and there are 16 stitches on the thumb gusset between the two markers.
Reserving the thumb stitches
Continuing to work in pattern, work to the first marker; remove the marker; using a tapestry needle, slide the 16 thumb gusset stitches onto a piece of scrap yarn; bring the two sides of the hand firmly together and work to the end of the round.
Finishing the hand
Knit in pattern for five more rows to complete one more cable-lace pattern. (For a slightly longer mitt, two more cable-lace patterns can be worked.) Then work 5 rounds in k4, p2 ribbing. Bind off loosely.
Finishing the thumb
Carefully pick up the thumb stitches from the contrasting thread. Divide evenly across the two needles. Attach yarn and pick up and knit 2 stitches in the crotch where the thumb meets the hand. Work 10 rounds in stockinette stitch, or until desired length is attained. Bind off loosely. Weave in loose ends.
LEFT MITTEN
Cast on 48 stitches. Allocating 24 stitches to each needle, being careful not to twist, join and begin working in the round.
Cuff
Rib pattern: k2, \*p2, k4 \* repeat from \* to \* 7 times, p2, k2 Work 20 rounds in this rib pattern to complete the cuff.
Body of the hand
When knitting the left-hand mitten, the stockinette pattern for the palm of the mitt is worked first in each round (first needle), and the cable-lace stitch for the back of the mitt is worked next (second needle). There are also minor changes to the stitches used in the pattern, in order to ensure the lace eyelets are symmetrical with those in the right hand. Round 1: k26, p2, c4b, p2, k2, k2po, yo,p2, c4f,p2, k2 Rounds 2, 4, and 6: k the k stitches and p the p stitches Round 3: k26, p2, k4, p2, k1 k2po, yo, k1, p2, k4, p2, k2 Round 5: k26, p2, k4, p2, k2po, yo, k2, p2, k4, p2,k2 Repeat these six rounds 4 times.
To increase for thumb gusset
At this point you will start making increases in rounds 1 and 4 of the cable lace pattern on the right side of the glove to create the thumb gusset, all the while continuing to work the stockinette pattern on the first needle and the cable-lace pattern on the second needle. Continue increasing in this manner every three rounds (increases are always done in rounds 1 and 4 of the pattern) until a total of 8 complete cable-lace patterns have been worked, and there are 16 stitches on the thumb gusset between the two markers.
Reserving the thumb stitches
Continuing to work in pattern, work to the first marker; remove the marker; thread a tapestry needle with a piece of contrasting color scrap yarn; slide the 16 thumb gusset stitches onto the scrap yarn; bring the two sides of the hand firmly together and work to the end of the round.
