


Kuura ("Frost" in Finnish) is a triangle shawl worked from back neck down. The shawl is made of two skeins of luscious merino-silk Silkbloom Fino. Adding or reducing lace pattern repeats you can make a small one-skein shawl with your favorite sock yarn or a large stole with lace yarn. Size: Approx. 57.1" / 145 cm wingspan along the edge sts, 25.6" / 65 cm from cast on along center sts to bind off. Yarn: Fingering weight yarn 236 yards / 400 m Shown in: BC Garn Sikbloom Fino (55 % merino, 45 % silk, 218 yards / 200 m per 100 g), color 14 silver, 2 balls Gauge: 19 sts = 4" / 10 cm after blocking Gauge is not crucial but will affect the finished size. Needles: Size 7 / 4.5 mm, 32" / 80 cm circular needle Notions: 2 stitch markers, a weaving needle. The chart shows the edge sts (3 sts on each side), half of the shawl and center sts (3 sts), so repeat the chart twice per row. Work RS rows from right to left and ws rows from left to right.

Cast on 3 sts. Knit 6 rows in garter stitch. Instead of turning, rotate the piece 90 degrees clockwise. Make a yo, pick up and knit 1 st from the middle garter ridge, yo. Rotate the piece another 90 degrees and pick up and knit 3 sts from the cast on edge. (9 sts) Set up row 1 (ws): K all sts. Set up row 2 (RS): K3, yo, pm, k3 (center sts), pm, yo, k3. Set up row 3 (ws): K3, p1, sm, k3 (center sts), sm, pl, k3. Set up row 4 (RS), corresponds to row 1 in Chart 1: K3, yo, k1, yo, sm, k3 (center sts), sm, yo, kl, yo, k3. Continue knitting Chart 1 starting from row 2 of the chart. The edge sts and center sts are knit on each row. work Chart 1 rows once. Start Chart 2. work the rows 4 times (or until the shawl is about 10 cm short of desired length). The chart shows the 12-st repeat which is worked once on the first time you knit Chart 2, twice on second time, three times on third time etc. Start Chart 3 which is the border. Work the border rows once repeating the 12-st repeat 5 times. Bind off the sts on ws row with a stretchy bind off: K2, move the two sts back on left needle, k 2 sts together through back loops, [k1, move the 2 sts back on left needle, k 2 sts together through back loops] repeat until you have 1 st on your needles. Cut yarn and pull it through the last st. weave in the yarn ends, block the shawl.
