Gauge: Approx. 20 stitches = 4” (10cm) in circular stockinette stitch, after blocking. To begin: Cast on 85 stitches. Place distinctly colored marker and join in the round, being careful not to twist. Band: Work in eyelet ribbing as follows. Rounds 1-2: (K3, P2) around. Round 3: (K2tog, YO, K1, P2) around. Rounds 4-5: Repeat Rounds 1-2. Round 6: (K1, YO, SSK, P2) around. Repeat these 6 rounds until work measures 2%/" (7cm) from cast-on edge, ending with a Round 3 or 6. Repeat Rounds 1-2 once more. N.B. Work yarnovers toward the tip of your needles to ensure that they do not stretch out of shape. Next round: (K6, M1) around to last stitch, K1. [99 sts] Body of hat: Knit every round (circular stockinette stitch), until hat measures 6" (15.5cm) from cast-on edge. Eyelet decreases: Place markers after every 11th stitch around, for a total of 9 stitch markers, including beginning-of-round marker. Round 1: (K3tog, YO, knit to marker, slip marker) around. [9 stitches decreased] Rounds 2-3: Knit. Repeat Rounds 1-3 (decreasing every third round) until 45 stitches remain. N.B. Change to double-points when necessary. Repeat Rounds 1-2 (decreasing every other round) until 27 stitches remain. Next Round: (K3tog, YO) around. Penultimate Round: Knit. Final Round: K2tog around. [9 stitches remain] To Finish: Break yarn, leaving a tail. Thread tail onto a darning needle and pull through remaining stitches to fasten off. Weave in ends on wrong side.
