Easy Diagonal Garter Mop Head Cover

based on “Grandma's Favorite Dishcloth” pattern found many places online but the first one I used many years ago was: http://www.groupepp.com/dishbout/kpatterns/grfavorite.html A rectangle-shaped, diagonally knit mop head cover knit with two strands of worsted weight cotton yarn to cover a Swiffer(R) mop head. I used two colors, green and cream, then brown and cream for the samples.
Materials
Yarn: 2 Sugar 'N Cream 2.5 oz balls (solid colors 120 yds/109 m; ombres 95 yds/86 m). It made two 8" x 13” mop head covers Needles: US size 10 (6 mm, UK 4) or to get gauge. Elastic - 1%4 or 1% inch wide Yarn needle to weave in ends Gauge is not important. Use any size that gives you the tightness of garter that is desired.
Instructions
Make first corner: Using two strands knit together, cast on 2 stitches. Row 1: knit across. Row 2: K1, YO, knit to end of row. Repeat row 2 until one side of the triangle measures 8 inches (I ended up with 28 stitches - your stitches may vary based on your gauge preference)

Close up of the rectangle Make body of mop head rectangle: Row 3: K1, YO, K2tog, knit to end of row. (turns the corner) Row 4: K1, YO, knit to last 4 stitches, k2tog, k2. Repeat rows 3 and 4 until long edge of the piece measures 13 inches. End with a row 4. Make last corner: Row 5: K1, YO, k2tog, knit to last 4 stitches, k2tog, k2. Repeat rows 5 until 7 stitches remain. Row 6: K1, YO, K2tog, K2tog, k2. Row 7: K1, YO, K2tog, K2tog, k1. Row 8: K1, YO, K2tog, K2tog. Row 9: K2tog, YO, K2tog. Bind off. Weave in loose ends. Finishing: Weave the elastic through the YO eyelets around the edge of the mop head rectangle. Pull snug to fit over the mop head tightly. Tie or sew the ends together. If you want to cover a different sized mop head, measure the mop head short width, add 2 inches, measure the mop head's length, add 2 inches. Use the width measurement instead of 8 inches and the length instead of the 13 inches. Greta Heddy copyright 2013
