Cuff
Cast on 14 stitches, then purl one row. Work Chart A through Rnd 36, purling all even Rnds. Bind off. Seam two short ends together to make cuff.
Mitten
Pick up 37 stitches around cuff, starting at the seam. Join in round, place marker at end of round. Rnd 1 $^{*}\mathsf{k}5$ , kfb\* (Repeat 6 times), k1 [43 sts]. Rnd 2 knit all sts. Rnd 3 kfb, k42 [44 sts]. Continue knitting all sts in every rnd until mitten measures 3.5 from bottom of cuff.
Afterthought Thumb
Knit first 6 sts in different color scrap wool. Slip 6 sts back to LHN and knit to end of round. Continue knitting all rounds until mitten measures 7 inches from bottom of cuff (in other words, until mitten covers your pinky), then work Rnd 4 to prepare for Decreases. Rnd 4 k22, pm, k22. Work Decrease Round (on next page) 8 times total until 12 stitches remain. Bind off Mitten using kitchner stitch.

Pattern Details: Simple mittens with a cabled wrist.
Yarn requirements: 2 skeins of Knit
Picks Shamrock [ $100\%$ Peruvian Highland Wool]. 82 yards75 meters. Color: Brennan. Total Yardage 141 yards/129 meters. Needle size(s): Size US 9/5.5 mm DPNs, or size needed to get gauge. Gauge: 16 stitches and 24 rounds over 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch.
Notions needed:
Darning Needle, Two Stitch Markers, scrap wool.
Decrease Round (Worked 8 times)
Knit to Marker 1, k1, ssk, knit to 3 sts before Marker 2, k2tog, k1, sm, k1 ssk, knit to 3 sts before Marker 1, k2tog, k1 .
Afterthought Thumb Part 2
Remove waste thread for thumb,there will be 5 sts on top Rnd, and 6 sts on bottom. Pick up 1 st on either side of top Rnd (from knit fabric). First rnd and all following rnds, k13 sts. Continue until thumb measures 2.5 inches long (or to top of your thumb). Break wool and thread through remaining stitches and pull tightly to close.
Bottom of Cuff
Pick up 37 sts around bottom of cuff. Knit every round for 1 inch. Rnd 1 purl all sts. Rnd 2 knit all sts. Rnd 3 purl all sts. Rnd 4 knit all sts. Bind off loosely.
Second Mitten
Directions are the same until Afterthought thumb. On waste yarn rnd knit to last 6 sts, knit waste yarn, put the 6 sts back on LHN, knit to end of round. Continue knitting as with first mitten.
