Work in garter stitch (knit all rows). 1st row (WS) black, then 4 rows red, 2 rows black. Join in the round. Work vertical stripes in stockinette st , 5 sts red, 5 sts black. On row 1 increase 15 sts: $^{\star}\mathsf{k}\,6,\mathsf{m}\,1^{\star}$ , repeat from \* to \*, end with k 5 $(=110$ sts). Work these vertical stripes till hat measures 10 - 14 cm /4 - 5,5 inches, depending on how long you want the hat. (The hat in the picture measured 11,5 cm) Then continue in garter st: Black: k one round, p next round. Red: k one round, p next round, decreasing as follows on this round: p3, p2tog ( $\scriptstyle\leftmoon$ sts) Black: k one round, p next round. With white and black yarn work stranded pattern in stockinette st according to chart A. Start the round with k2tog $\left(=87$ Sts). Then continue in garter st: Black: k one round, p next round. Red: k one round, p next round, decreasing as follows on this round: p3, p2tog ( $\scriptstyle=70$ sts) Black: k one round, p next round, p2tog twice on this round $\left(=68\right.$ sts). Then you start decreasing according to chart B. This will create the cross on top of the hat. I recommend you work this chart in red and white, and embroider the black stripe afterwards (duplicate stitch).

Chart A

Work with red yarn, embroider black Chart B is repeated four times. Decrease according to chart. Change to dpns when hat is to small for circulars. When chart is done you have 4 sts. Cut yarn and draw the end through remaining sts.
