Skinny Handspun Scarf
bu Patricia Schonhold
Materials
1 skein worsted weight yarn, ca. 180 m/100 g (pictured: BFL/alpaca 2-ply, 11 WPI) 6 mm needles crochet hook We all know that feeling: We make (or find) that perfect skein of worsted weight yarn, we take it home with us, give it a nice place in the stash, and then we... take it out once in a while, stroking it, wishing we had more of it because by all that is wooly, a person can only have so many hats. But despair not! This skinny, textured scarf makes the most out of any single luxury skein. The slip-stitch twist on mistake rib breaks up the thick and thin of handspun, and the loose gauge gives it a wonderful drape that will make your spinning friends envious and your kniting friends take up spinning!
Instructions
If you want a fringe, begin by cutting 12 30 cm lengths of yarn for the fringe so you can just knit until you run out of yarn. Cast on 15 sts. Set-up: \*k2, p2\* to last 3 sts, k2, p1 Row 1: p2, \*k1, sll, p2\* to last st, k1 Row 2: \*k1, sll, p2\* to last 3 sts, k1, sl1, p1 Repeat these two rows until about 30 cm of yarn remain, ending on row 1. Bind off by working k1, \*k1, sl sts back to left needle, k2tog Handwash and block gently. Attaching the fringe: Fold the fringe threads in half. Using a crochet hook, thread them through the edge of the scarf, and pull the ends through the resulting loop to fasten. Use the three lines of slip stitches on one side to evenly space the fringe. Trim to uniform length.
