Tapered Ribbed Hat
Worsted weight yarn: approx. 3 oz. Size H Hook (or hook that gives you the heaviness that you want.) Size I Hook (or one size larger than the hook you will use for the body of the hat.) Blunt-End Tapestry Needle to sew the top of the hat Gauge with Caron Simply Soft yarn: 4 hdc stitches per inch, 4 hdc rows equal 1 1/4 inch Gauge with Red Heart Super Saver or CaronOne Pound: 31/2 hdcper inch 4hdcrowsequals13/4 inch (Gauge isn't really important because you can simply add more stitches or rows to get the size you want.) Instructions are for average adult size.
Directions:
Allow a 24" tail to sew top of hat later and loosely clain 38 (or number that you want for length of hat.) If you want a cuff to turn back, add more chains. If you don't add the cuff now, you can add one later if you want. Row 1: hdc in third chain and in each chain across, turn. Row 2: sc in both loops of first stitch, sc in lack loop only of next 11 sts, hdc in back loop of each stitch to end, hdc in both loopsof laststitch. Row 3: ch 2, hdc in both loops of first stitch, hdc in back loop only across row to last stitch, hdc in both loops of last stitch. turn. Repeat rows 2 and 3 untilit fits snugly around the head. I worked 52 rows. Make sure last row ends at narrow end of cap. Joining cap: Fold in half so that the end of fabric with the beginning chain is on top and the last row worked is underneath with yarn loop on right. Insert hook through first stitch of beginning chain and then through back loop of first stitch on last row worked. Hook the yarn at the end of last row and pullthrough both loops on hook. Continue to sl st across row being careful not to pull the yarn too tightly. Your tension should match the tension of your fabric. At end, do Not fasten off. Edging: Switch to a size I hook and, working loosely, work along the front edge of cap by working 1 sc into the end of each row. (You will have the same number of sc's as the number of rows that you worked for the cap.) You can stop now or you can continue on and add a cuff. For a cuff, just continue to crochet until cuff is as long as you like. You can add stripes if you want. Be sure to check the tension of your work frequently to make sure that the cuff has enough "give." Joining: With a tapestry needle, weave the beginning yarn tail in and out through the top of hat, close to the edge. Pull tight and stitchholeclosed securely.Weave in ends. With Red Heart Super Saver yarn or Caron One Pounder, which iare bulkier than the Caron Simply Soft, Istarted with a chain of 35 and worked pattern for 41 rows.
