Scrappy Sockdown - A Toe-Up Pattern

Use your preferred gauge to make a great pair of socks, utilizing every bit of your special hand-painted yarns or using scraps with contrast toes, heels, and cuffs! This sock is worked in the round from the toes upward, with a short row heel, & wilfit a woman's medium foot. The pattern accommodates a multitude of gauges, & uses the Magic Loop method.
Materials:
Approximately 275 to 590 yards fingering weight to sport weight yarn, depending on size and leg length. If you are using a contrasting color, you will need approximately 100 to 150 yards of the total for contrast toes, heels, and cuff. Size O to 2.5 ( $2.0\:\mathrm{mm}$ 1 $3.0\;\mathrm{mm}$ knitting need, or size ndd for your distint gaue. Stitch markers (optional)

Gauge:
7 stitches per inch [7.5 stitches per inch, 8 stitches per inch,8.5 stithes per inch, 9 stitches pr inch]
Abbreviations
K Knit P Purl KFB Knit into front and back of stitch - knit into stitch, then while keeping it on left needle knit into the back of this stitch. Increases one stitch. STS StitchesSM Slip marker W&T Wrap and turn M1R Make one right. With left needle, lift bar between needles from behind, knit into front of this stitch. M1L Make one left. With left needle, lift bar between needles from the front, knit into back of this stitch. \*\* Repeat instructions between asterisks as instructed TBL Through back loop Toe: Using Judy's Magic Cast-On and your contrast color, cast on 12 [14, 16, 16, 18] stitches on each needle for a total of 24 [28, 32, 32, 36] stitches. Foot:
Switch to main color. Knit all stitches until entire length reaches $2\ ^{1/2}\mathrm{{}^{\prime\prime}}$ less than total foot length.
Heel:
Switch back to contrast color. Heel is worked back and forth over half of the total stitches (hereafter referred to as the sole stitches) while the instep stitches rest. Row 1: Knit tolast stitch, wrap &turn (bring yarn to front, slip next stitch purlwise,bring yan to back, slip stitch back onto left needle, turn work). Row 2: Purl to last stitch, wrap & turn (with yarn in front slip next stitch purlwise, bring yarn to back, turn work). Row 3: Knit to one stitch before last wrapped stitch, w&t. Row 4: Purl to one stitch before last wrapped stitch, w&t. Repeat rows 3 & 4 until 6 [7, 8, 9, 10] stitches remain unwrapped. Knit to first wrapped stitch, lift wrap from the right side underneath & place back on left needle to the left of the next stitch to be worked, and knit both stitches together as one, w&t. Purl to first wrapped stitch,lift wrap from the right side underneath & place back on left needle to the left of the next stitch to be worked, and purl both stitches together as one, w&t. \*Knit to the next wrapped stitch, ift both wraps from the right side underneath & place back on left needle to the left of the next stitch to be worked, and knit all three stitches together as one, W&t. Leg:
Switch to main color. Knit allstitches until you reach your desired leg length (I do this for $6{-}8^{\prime\prime}$ then start cuffh. To make increases for calfif making taller-than-crew socks, work leg as established for approximately $6^{\prime\prime}$ . The following increases are made on sole stitches only. Then, onsole stitches, knit 14 [15, 16, 17, 18], place marker, MR, M1L, place marker, knit 14 [15, 16, 17, 18]. Knit remaining stitches. Work 8 rounds even. Then, on sole stitches, knit 14 [15, 16, 17, 18], sm, M1R, k2, M1L, sm, knit 14 [15, 16, 17, 18]. Knit remaining stitches. Work 8 rounds even. To continue increasing as such, knit to marker, MR, knit to next marker, ML, knit remaining stitches, then work 8 rounds even. Work as established until leg reaches desired length.
Cuff:
Switch to contrast color. \*Knit 2, purl $2^{*}$ over all stitches. Repeat until cuff measures $2^{\prime\prime}$ you get bored with ribbing, or you run out of yarn. To bind off, k1, $^{\ast1}\mathrm{k}1$ slip stitches back onto left needle, k 2 tbl\* across all stitches. This creates a lovely and stretchy bindoff.
Finishing:
Make a second sock. Weave in allends, block lightly, and make your feet happy by wearing them all the time!
