Quick and Easy Bag

This is a market bag I designed by looking at similar bags and taking the best elements to design my own. If you can chain and single crochet, you can make this bag! I have made five of these bags so far. The small size is comparable to a medium sized gift bag. The medium size is big enough to hold papers and books. The large size is shown and it holds three bath towels with room to spare. If you want to make them scrappy, you can change colors at each section of the bag or just change colors when you use up the previous color! Please note that cotton yarn stretches! Keep the handle short if you intend to put heavy things, like groceries in it! (My first ever cotton bag now hits me in the ankles because I added several inches to the handle!) Please feel free to make these for yourself or as gifts, but please do not sell them. Yarn: Lily Cotton Yarn, Small—2 skeins, (Medium—3 skeins, Large—4 skeins) Hook:Size G Tapestry Needle: For weaving in ends Ch- Chain Sc—Single Crochet Bottom: Ch 16 (21, 26) Sc in second stitch from the end, place first stitch marker. Sc in next 14 (19, 24) sc. 3 sc in next stitch, place stitch markers in first and third stitches. Sc in next 13 (18, 23) sc. 2 sc in next stitch, place stitch marker in first stitch. Do NOT join! Sc in each sc, 3 sc in each stitch with a stitch marker. Move stitch marker to the middle stitch of the 3 corner stitches. Continue for 10 (13, 16) rows. Bottom Sides: Keep first stitch marker in place to indicate the beginning, remove the other 3. Sc in each sc for 3 (5, 7) rows. The edges will begin to curl, creating a small wall along the bottom. Fold the bottom in half, lengthwise. Find the center stitch on the short side closest to the first stitch marker. Move the stitch marker to this center stitch. (Several stitches behind where the hook currently is working.) Mesh Walls: All sizes: \*Ch 4, skip 3 sc, sc in 4"h sc\* Repeat all along the sc row. (If you are near the end and do not have the exact number of sc's, back up a few ch 5 loops and skip 2 or 4 sc to come out at the beginning. Always ch 5. If you set it up this way it will come out in the meshrows.) Row 2: Ch 4, sc in 2nd ch of previous ch 4. Continue for 20 (24, 28) rows. Stop above the stitch marker. Move stitch marker up to where hook is. Top Band: 4 sc in each ch 4 space all the way around. Sc in each sc for 2 (4, 6) rows. [3 (5, 7) rows total]. Handle: Sc 2 (3, 3) stitches past half way point where stitch marker is. Ch1. \*Turn, sc 5 (6, 7)\*. Repeat until the strap measures 14 (18, 22) inches. Finishing: Leave a long tail and sew the handle to the middle of the other short side using the tapestry needle. Weave in all other ends. \*Want an even quickerbag? Use ahalf double crochet forthe bottom and ch 6 in the mesh section, sc into the 3'd ch of the previous ch 6. ① Jennifer L. Hummel 2012—Please only use this pattern for personal use or gifts.
