Notes:

Doing another design for my daughter with twisted stitches and a beautiful yarn from Loret Karman, called ^gebaar' (=gesture). Recovering from my chemotherapy I knitted a pair of socks in 2011 I called "Leben und Liab" (Life and Love) based on old Austrian stitch pattern. One of the stitch patterns I used is called " Brennende Liab" (Burning Love). My husband and I used to walk a lot in Austria, where I came across their beautiful traditional costumes. Hand-knitted socks are part of those traditional costumes. In Austria those socks are based on twisted stitch patterns that go from mother to daughter and all have their own meaning. A woman knitting socks would put "secret messages" in the socks for her loved ones. The socks mostly have a mixture of 7 of those separate stitch patterns. I used 6 then, mostly because the original socks are knitted with far thinner yarn than I use(d). In the book " Twisted-Stitch Knitting; Traditional Patterns & Garments from the Styrian Enns Vally" by Maria Erlbacher a lot of those traditional patterns are described, from tiny and simple to large and very elaborate and difficult. When I had the yarn of Loret in my hands these patterns merged in my head. My dear husband, my son and daughters were so loving and caring while I was lying on my bed, too ill to get up. I think this is one way as how "burning love" can present itself. I'm still so deeply grateful for their continuous care and love so I will knit another sock to testify... These socks were designed for my daughter with size 42.

Material:

Needle size 2,25 mm. About 100 gram sock yarn. Because this is a sock with twisted stitches a solid or semisolid yarn gives a better result.

Cast on:

ast on 60 St. with needles size 2.25 mm. and divide equally over 3 or 4 Needle

Cuff/ Leg:

\*Ktbl1, P1 \* 20 Rounds. Increase 8 stitches in the next round for knitting the twisted stitches, that are not so very stretchy. The increases are made around the places where the twisted stitches are foreseen so that the ribbed pattern of the cuff continues in the leg. (See the chart at the end.) Knit in pattern until the leg has the required length. The Heel is knitted over 35 stitches. Needle 1: \* Sl 1 purlwise, K1\*, K1 Needle 2: Purl Repeat needle 1 and 2 until you have knitted 34 needles. Turn of the heel: (12-11-12) Needle 1: Sl 1 purlwise, K17, SSK, K1, turn. Needle 2: Sl 1 purlwise, P4, P2TOG, P1, turn. There are 12 stitches not knitted on both sides now. Needle 3: Sl 1 purlwise, K5, SSK, K1, turn. Needle 4: Sl 1 purlwise, P6, P2TOG, P1, turn and knit like this further until 19 st. remain on your needle. Gusset Pick up and knit 17 st. on each side of the gusset. Knit in pattern on the instep. The gusset and the sole are knitted in stockinet stitch. Pick up an extra stitch before and after the instep if you like to be sure there'll be no holes. Make sure before knitting the gusset the cables are centred on the instep. The instep starts with P1 and ends with P1, that will make 35 stitches on the instep.

Gusset decreases:

Round 1: Knit til last 3 st., K2TOG, K1; Knit the 35 instep stitches in pattern; K1, SSK, knit to the end of the needle. Round 2.: No decreases and knit all heel stitches; Knit the 35 instep stitches in pattern Repeat these two rounds until 30 st. remain on the sole of the foot. Still knitting 35 ? instep stitches in pattern. The difference in number of stitches is because stockinet stitches are stretchier than twisted stitches. 7 Knit further until the foot is as long as required; the heel stitches are knitted, the instep I is in pattern. Leave 5 cm. for the toe.

Toe:

This sock comes with two alternative toes to knit. One plain as always; the other one in which the Liab-stitch pattern merges together in the top of the toe. Mainly by decreasing in the middle of the instep and not at the sides as usual. The Liab-pattern is not described in the even rounds of the toe description. Look at the description or the charts if you did not memorize it by then.

Toe I:

Round 1: Before starting the decreases for the toe decrease 5 st. around the place of the twisted stitches on the instep of the foot. This leaves 30 stitches on the instep of the foot. Knit the rest of this round in plain stockinet. Round 2: K1, SSK, knit across to last 3 st., K2TOG, K1. Continue with K1, SSK, knit across to last 3 st., K2TOG, K1.
