Mario Lovey
You will need: Red Yarn Blue Yarn Buff Yarn (or whatever skin tone you want to use) Brown Yarn Black Yarn, small amount White Yarn, small amount H hook (5.00 mm) D hook (3-3.25 mm)
Fiberfill
Yarn Needle You may also need stitch markers since the head is worked in the round and not joined. Stitches used: ss (slip stitch), sc (single crochet), dc (double crochet), hdc (half double crochet), ch (chain), inc (increase), dec (decrease)
Blanket: H hook
I used a basic granny square pattern for the blanket. Starting with red: Row One: Chain 3, join with a slip stitch to chain 1 to form a circle (you may also do a magic circle if you prefer) Row Two: Chain 3 (this counts as your first dc in every row), then do two (2) more dc in the circle, ch 2, three (3) dc in circle, ch 2, three (3) dc in circle, ch 2... you should have a total of four (4) sets of three dc in the circle. Join the last set of dc to the first ch 3 at the top chain with asc. Row Three: Ch 3, 2 dc in the first chain space from the previous row, ch 2, in next ch space from previous row do 3 dc, ch 2, and in same space do 3 more dc (this is called a shell stitch). Repeat this around until you reach the first ch of this row. In the same space as the first set of 3 dc you will do 3 dc, ch 2, and join to the top of the starting ch 3 with a sc. Row Four: Ch 3, 2 dc in the same space, ch 1, 3 dc in next space, ch 1, 3 dc ch 2 3 dc in corner space, ch 1, 3 dc in next space, ch 1, 3dc ch 2 3dc in next space (this is forming your corner of your square). Continue around until you reach the first set of 3 space where you will do 3 dc, ch 2, and join to the top of the chain with a sc. epeat row four, increasing your set of 3 dc between corners with each round Row 8-14: IN BLUE repeat row four, ensuring you continue to increase your set of 3 dc between corners withevery round. \*\*14 rows creates a fairly large sized square, about 15 inches by 15 inches. If you would like a smaller blanket, remove a row or two from each color. The head for the lovey is also pretty large, and may look off on a smaller blanket. Use your own judgment. \*\*
Mario Part: H hook
Head: with buff (or whatever flesh tone you have chosen) will be worked in the round, stitch markers may be needed. Do not join your rounds Round One: ch 2, in second ch from hook, 6 sc Round Two: 2 sc in each sc for a total of 12 stitches Round Three: 1 sc, 2 sc in next stitch (also called an increase), 1 sc, 2 sc in next stitch (inc). follow pattern until you have 18 stitches Round Four: sc in the next 2 stitches, 2 sc (inc) in next stitch, sc in the next 2 stitches, 2 sc (inc) in next stitch... follow pattern until you have 24 stitches Round Five: sc in the next 3 stitches, 2 sc (inc) in next stitch, sc in the next 3 stitches, 2 sc (inc) in next stitch... Follow pattern until you have 30 stitches Round Six: sc in the next 4 stitches, 2 sc (inc) in next stitch, sc in the next 4 stitches, 2 sc (inc) in next stitch... Follow pattern until you have 36 stitches \*\* for round 3 thru , you il ad one sc between your sets.. round three will have sc,then an increase, round four will have 2 sc then an increase, round five will have 3 sc then an increase, round six will have 4 sc then an increase\*\* Round Seven: sc in each stitch for 36 stitches Round Eight: sc in each stitch for 36 stitches Round Nine: sc in each stitch for 36 stitches Round Ten: sc in each stitch for 36 stitches Round Eleven: sc in each stitch for 36 stitches Round Twelve: sc in each stitch for 36 stitches Round Thirteen: sc in each stitch for 36 stitches Round Fourteen: sc in the next 4 stitches, decrease (go through stitch one like you are going to single crochet, do not yarn over and pull through but instead go through the next stitch. You will have three loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through. This pulls two stitches together to decrease the size of your round) follow this pattern until you have 30 stitches Round Fifteen: sc in the next 3 stitches, decrease, sc in the next 3 stitches, decrease... Follow pattern until you have 24 stitches Round Sixteen: sc in the next 2 stitches, decrease, sc in the next 2 stitches, decrease.... Follow pattern until you have 18 stitches \*\*At this point you should considerbeginning to stuffyourhead withfiberfill pack it in but don't over fill it or you will catch it in your stitches\*\* Round Seventeen: sc, decrease, sc, decrease... follow pattern until you have 12 stitches Round Eighteen: decrease in each stitch until you have 6 stitches Finish Off your row securely and leave a long tail for sewing the head onto the blanket part. Finish stuffing your head, shaping it as you feel necessary. Stuffing densely will cause the head to be heavy (but will ensure the shape will be kept).
Eyes (make 2): D hook
\*\*You want the eyes to be oval shaped. To achieve this I used a D sized hook.If you are uncomfortable using a smaller hook, feel free to use felt to create your eyes.\*\* Round One with BLACK: ch 2, then in the 2nd chain from the hook do 6 sc, ss joining your blue before pulling through the stitch. Round Two with BLUE: 2 sc (inc) in the next 2 stitches, 2 hdc(inc), dc, 2 hdc(inc), 2 sc in the next 2 stitches, ss joining your white before pulling through the stitch. Round Three with WHITE: sc in the next 3 stitches, 2 sc(inc), sc, hdc in the next 3 stitches, 2 dc(inc), hdc, sc in the next 3 stitches, ss to join (this final stitch will be in the previous row to round the eye off) Sew in tails if you wish, I just cut mine low enough that when I sew the eye onto the face they will be hidden behind.
Nose: H hook
Using flesh color yarn: Round One: ch 2 Round Two: in second ch from hook, do 6 sc Round Three: 2 sc in each stitch for a total of 12 stitches Round Four: sc in each stitch for 12 stitches Round Five: sc in each stitch for 12 stitches Round Six: decrease in each stitch for 6 stitches Finish Off your row securely and leave a tail for sewing onto head. Stuff the nose with fiberfill, shaping as you feel necessary. If you overstuff the nose, you risk pulling fiberfill out when you stitch it to the head. Add or remove fiberfill as needed. If you have a tail from the beginning chain, leave it hang inside the nose and add fiberfill over it.
Ears (make 2): H hook
Using flesh color yarn: Round One: ch 2 Round Two: in second ch from hook do 3 sc Round Three: 2 sc, sc, 2sc for a total of 5 stitches Round Four: sc in each stitch for 5 stitches Finish off your row, securing your final stitch and leaving a tail long enough to sew onto head. When I was going to start sewing onto the head, I took my yarn needle and stitched over the beginning chain through the bottom row so that I didn't have to sew my tail in somehow, and snipped the end of it off. Mustache: \*this can also be made in felt\* h hook Using Brown:
Row One: Ch 8
Row Two: in second chain from hook ss, ch 6 then ss in next ch, ch 5 then ss in next ch, ch 4 then ss in next ch, ch 4 then ss in next ch, ch 4 then ss in next ch, ch 5 then ss in next ch, ch 6 thenss in last ch Finish Off and secure your final stitch, leaving a long tail to attach to head. Weave in your tail from the original ch 8 into the chain itself. When sewing mustache onto face, I only secure the top part, so the mustache itself would move still. Feel free to attach it on the bottom too. Hair: \*this can also be made in felt\* H hook Using brown:
Row One: Ch 17
Row Two: in second chain from hook sc, ch 3, sc into next chain, ch 3, sc into next chain... follow pattern until you reach the final stitch, securing it with a sc. If you prefer Mario to have longer hair, chain 4 between sc. Finish Off and secure your final stitch, leaving a long tail to sew hair to hat. When finished with the hat, I stitched Mario's hair to the back brim, and then secured the hat to the head. This leaves the hair moving just like the mustache. You may sew it directly onto the head if you prefer, or cut it out of felt and glue it on.
Side Burns (make 2): \*these can also be made in felt\* H hook
Using Brown:
Row One: ch 4
Row Two: in second chain from hook sc, sc in the next 2 stitches, turn your work but do not chain Row Three: sc in first two stitches, and ss in last stitch Finish off and leave a tail for sewing onto head.
Hat: H hook
Using Red: Round One: Ch 2 Round Two: in second ch from hook do 6 sc Round Three: 2 sc (inc) in each stitch for 12 stitches total Round Three: sc, 2 sc (inc), sc, 2 sc (inc).. follow pattern until you have 18 stitches Round Four: sc in the next 2 stitches, 2 sc (inc), sc in the next 2 stitches, 2 sc (inc).. follow pattern until you have 24 stitches Round Five: sc in the next 3 stitches, 2 sc (inc), sc in the next 3 stitches, 2 sc (inc)... follow pattern until you have 30 stitches Round Six: sc in the next 4 stitches, 2 sc (inc), sc in the next 4 stitches, 2 sc (inc)..follow pattern until you have 36 stitches Round Seven: sc in the next 5 stitches, 2 sc (inc), sc in the next 5 stitches, 2 sc (inc)... Follow pattern until you have 42 stitches Round Eight: sc in the next 6 stitches, 2 sc (inc), sc in the next 6 stitches, 2 sc (inc)... follow pattern until you have 48 stitches Round Nine: sc in the next 7 stitches, 2 sc (inc), sc in the next 7 stitches, 2 sc (inc)... follow pattern until you have 54 stitches Round Ten: sc in each stitch for 54 stitches Round Eleven: sc in the next 6 stitches, dec, sc in the next 6 stitches, dec... follow pattern until you have48stitches Round Twelve : sc in the next 5 stitches, dec, sc in the next 5 stitches, dec... follow pattern until you have42stitches Round Thirteen: sc in the next 4 stitches, dec, sc in the next 4 stitches, dec ... Follow pattern until you have 36 stitches Round Fourteen: sc in each stitch for 36 stitches Round Fifteen: sc in each stitch for 36 stitches Finish off and secure your final stitch, leaving a long tail to sew hat onto head. \*\*There is one additional sc in between increases during your increase rounds. There is one less sc between decreases in your decrease rounds.\*\* To start the bill, count 17 stitch to the left, join your red yarn again. Row One: sc in each stitch until you get to 12, chain one and turn your wor Row Two: working in back loops only (BLO) sc in each stitch across for 12 stitches, chain one and turn your work (if you are looking at your hat, the loops that are FARTHEST away from you are the loops you will be working in. This is for ROw TWO ONLY!) v Three: sc in each stitch across for 12 stitches, chain one and turn your worl Row Four: sc in each stitch across for 12 stitches. Finish off and secure your final stitch, leaving a short tail to crochet over. To complete your hat, ss in each stitch around, being sure to do 2 sc in the stitches where the bill joins the hat to ensure a smooth transition and that you don't make your work pucker. SS over the tail left from the bill. When you get to the end of the hat where you first started, secure your final stitch and leave a short tail to weave into your hat. When you have finished your hat, sew your emblem on, and stuff with fiberfill. The hat should be sewn onto the head just above where the ears are at. When you sew the bill part of the hat, be sure to go through the row that is still the hat so your bill is free moving. Also be sure to add your hair to the hat before you sew it onto the head if that is what you choose to do.
Emblem: H hook
Using White: Round One: ch 2 Round Two: in second ch from hook do 6 sc Round Three: 2 sc (inc) in each stitch for a total of 12 stitches inish off and secure your final stitch. Leave a tail for sewing emblem onto ha
"M":
Using Red, I took my yarn needle and inserted it through the back of the emblem, and back stitched through to make each stick of the letter. When you are finished, cut a tail, and tie a knot with the beginning tail. When you sew the emblem onto the hat, the tails will be hidden, but secure. Be sure you do not pull your yarn too tight, or you stitches will disappear and your letter will be incomplete looking. \*\*\*Eyes, sideburns, hair and mustache can all be created using felt if you would like. I do not use felt so I can't give directions on how to do it, but some people like to use it. I did not make a mouth on my Mario head because there simply was not enough room. If you would like to make a mouth, you could backstitch it on with black yarn, or even create one out of felt!\*\*\* Sew your Mario head onto your blanket. I placed it directly over the center of the blanket and fed my needle through the middle. Sew until you feel that it is secure enough. I then fed my needle back up the center of the blanket and up into Mario's head, pushing down on the hat until the needle popped out. I pulled the needle out and snipped my yarn and then fluffed the hat back up, which makes the tail slip back inside the head. https://www.facebook.com/TwistedFibersByVinita \*\*Please DO NOT copy this pattern in any form and present it as your own.
