Butterflies and Tulips! This mitten has an afterthought thumb and a double cuff.
Note:
If you will be printing the chart, keep in mind that it will be easier to read in color. Size: 2-3 years
Abbreviations:
K = Knit P = Purl K1P1 = knit one purl one ribbing KTOG= knit two together MC = Main color CC = Contrast color Gauge: 8 stitches and 9 rows = 1 inch in stranded colorwork. (blocked)
Yarn:
Any DK weight yarn in 5 colors. This is a good pattern for using up scraps. I used Yarnundyed DK Undyed Superwash BFL for the MC. Filatura Di Crosa Zara in 1727 for CC1 and 1923 for CC3. Plymouth Select DK Merino Superwash in Nutmeg for CC2. Cascade Heritage Solids and Quatro Colors(fingering) held double in colorways Flaming Pink and Wine for CC4.
Needles:
2.5 mm US size 1 or size needed to get gauge.
Begin:
Cast on 52 stitches in MC using preferred method. I used long tail cast on Double cuff: In MC Knit one row. Knit 12 rows in k1p1 ribbing Knit one row Purl one row
Body of Mitten:
Begin hand chart working from bottom to top and right to left for right hand mitten. Work chart left to right to make a left hand mitten. When you reach row 29 above the red thumb line, knit the 9 stitches above the red line on contrasting scrap yarn, (sts 29-37 for right hand mitten and sts 43-51 for left hand mitten). Move the scrap yarn stitches back onto the left needle and knit them again according to the chart. Continue knitting chart. When working rows 33-42, you will need to carry the CC3 yarn across the back of the mitten by wrapping it. You will have 3 yarns during this part of the chart. After finishing the chart, cut yarn and thread the tail through remaining stitches. Pull tight.
Thumb:
Pick up the 18 stitches from scrap yarn, taking care to preserve the order of the colors. Work thumb charts from right to left, (even the left mitten), starting at inside of thumb with the alternating mc and cc2 stitches, to line up the pattern. When done the chart, cut yarn leaving a long enough tail to sew together remainin: stitches. Sew stitches by threading yarn through a stitch on one side and then through one on the other side. Repeat until done. Use yarn tails to sew up any holes where the thumb joins the body of the mitten.
Finishing:
Fold ribbed part of cuff inside and sew down onto the back side of row 14 of the chart. (If you would prefer a longer cuff to tuck under the coat sleeve, just leave it as is with no sewing.) Weave in ends. Block mittens. Play in snow.
