Queen Anne's Lace
Pattern by Nancy Vandivert This is the third in a series of mittens using designs inspired by flowers, both wild and domesticated. Generously sized, with thumb gusset thumb and a wide cuff, Queen Anne's Lace can be worked to fit many hand sizes and can even be used as a second layer over gloves. Worked in the round in two colors, from charts, duplicate stitching and added beads provide a little flash. Finished Size: 9 inch hand circumference, 10.25 inches total length

Notes:
There are two charts for this mitten, one for the mitten body and one for the thumb gusset. The mitten body chart is very large. A pdf copy of both charts for these mittens maybe downloaded at www.nancyvandivert.com/chartserrata/. When working in the round, read all chart rows from right-to-left. The mitten chart shows a suggested placement for both the right and left thumbs, but these may be altered to preference. The thumb chart includes both the gusset and thumb top. Again, length may be altered to taste. · To make this mitten larger, add an equal number of stitches on either side of the 3-column blue and white border.
Abbreviations:
K = knit pm = place marker yo = yarnover P = purl K2tog = knit 2 together rem = remaining m = marker SSK = slip, slip knit st(s) = stitche(s)
Directions:
With CC 1, cast on 78 sts. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist sts, and pm for the end of the round. Arrange sts so one half has 38 sts (the palm) and the other has 40 sts (the flower). Work scalloped edge as follows:
Row 1:
On the side with 38 sts, work K2, \*(yo, k1), 3 times, (k2tog) 3 times; repeat from \* to the end of this side. On the side with 40 sts, work K4, \*(yo, k1) 3 times, (k2tog) 3 times; repeat from \* to the end of this side. Row 2: Knit all sts. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 twice more. Next Row: Attach MC and begin at Row 1 of Mitten Body chart and work Rows 1-95 once. At Row 25, begin Thumb Gusset as follows: work to placement of thumb, pm, work Row 1 of Thumb Gusset chart, pm, complete other side of mitten in pattern. Continue to work both Mitten Body and Thumb Gusset patterns through Row 21 of Thumb Gusset Chart. On Row 21 of Thumb Gusset, place the Thumb Gusset stitches onto scrap yarn or a stitch holder, cast on three stitches (white, blue. white) over the gap between the Thumb Gusset and the Mitten Body and continue the Mitten Body chart as indicated.
Queen Anne's Lace
Pattern by Nancy Vandivert When all decreases at top of mitten are complete, break yarns, leaving an 18-inch tail, and use Kitchener Stitch or a Three-Needle Bind-Off to close the top. Pull tail to inside and weave in securely.
Thumb
Place reserved Thumb Gusset stitches onto dpns, pm for beginning of round, attach MC and CC1, and begin Row 22 of Thumb Gusset Chart and work through Row 36. Break CC1. With MC, (k1, k2tog) around, then work k2tog around. Break MC, leaving a 12-inch tail, thread tail onto tapestry needle and weave through rem sts. Pull tail to inside and weave in securely.
Duplicate Stitch and Beading
Weave in all ends and steam block lightly. Use dark red yarn and duplicate stitch over the center of the flower. Use yellow yarn to duplicate stitch the butterfly wings and bodies. Use black yarn to duplicate stitch the butterfly heads and tails. Use CC2 to duplicate stitch the flower stems and leaves. Add beads at the intersections of the lace pattern on the mitten cuff. Enjoy!
