WYCHFINGERS PATTERNS
Summer scarf VERSION 2 Feb 17,2010 Size: approximately $9\times78$ inches

Materials: Elsebeth Lavold Hempathy - 3 skeins (approx 420 m / 460 yds) Needles 3.75 mm / US 5 5.0 mm / US 8 Gauge is not important. This pattern involves using needles larger than normally used for the yarn in order to achieve an open fabric with lovely drape. Normal for Hempathy is $3.5~\mathsf{m m}$ The scarf is worked in two equal pieces and joined at the centre in order to take advantage of the zig-zag lower edge produced by the stitch pattern. A wider scarf or shawl can be made by increasing the number of pattern repeats across each row. Stitch pattern (multiple of 13 sts): Rows 1 and 3: \*Inc 1 (k into front and back of st), k4, sl 1, k2 tog, psso, k4, inc 1 (as before)\*. Rows 2 and 4: Purl across. Alternative: On Row 4, knit across. This will give a garter-ridge pattern and a very different look.
TO MAKE:
With smaller needles, cast on 65 sts. Work 2 rows in stocking st. Change to larger needles. Begin pattern (5 repeats across). Work to one half of desired length, ending on Row 4. Leave on spare needle. Work second half as first. Do not cast off. Join the live stitches of the two halves using Kitchener st. (Good instructions can be found on knitty.com). Steam-block with an iron and damp cloth, if ironing is appropriate for your yarn. If you choose to wet-block as for lace, you might experiment with your swatch first.
