Random Twists Knit Hat
By Hope Anderson, August 2012
I wanted a simple hat with a touch of texture but not a traditional cable pattern. A series of "random" twists gives just enough detail. The decorative twist of the band adds another bit of visual interest. Yarn: 110-112 yards (2.9 oz) 100% Superfine Organic Merino Wool, Hand-dyed by Janet Stollnitz Gauge: Us8/6mm in garter 4 stitches per inch US11/8mm in stockinette 3 stitches per inch. Using Us8/6mm needles, cast on 84 stitches Rows 1-9: Knit Row 10: Bind off 9 stitches (75 remain). Join in round and insert marker. Pearl Row 11: Pearl Row 12: Change to US11/8mm needles (Circular or DPN). Knit Rows 13-15: Knit Row 16: [K8 Cable next 4, dropping to front] Repeat 6 times. Knit remaining stitches.

Rows 17-20: Knit Row 21: K4 [Cable 4 K8] repeat until 8 stitches remain. K4 Cable 4 Rows 22-25: Knit Row 26: [ Cable 4 K6] repeat 6 times. K4 Cable 4 K3 Rows 27-30: Knit Row 31: [K4 Cable 4 K6 Cable 4] repeat 6 times. K3 Row 32: Knit Row 33: [K4 K2TG] repeat until 2 stitches remain K2 Row 34: Change to DPN. Knit Row 35: [K3 K2TG] repeat until 2 stitches remain K2 Row 36: Knit Row 37: [K2 K2TG] repeat until 1 stitch remains K1 Row 38: Knit Row 39: [K1 K2TG] repeat until 1 stitch remains K1 Row 40: Knit Row 41: K2TG repeat until end Row 42: Knit Row 43: K2TG repeat until end Row 44: Knit. Cut 6" tail. Thread through last remaining stitches and weave in ends

Finishing: Return to band. Twist and stitch down the 9-stitch flap using a tapestry needle. For a better fit, sew up the under-joining as well. Weave in ends.
