H hook or size needed for gauge. First 3 rounds measure approximately 4 inches square. 2 to 4 colors worsted weight yarn. This pattern works best with solid colors. Stitches used: double crochet (dc), chain stitch (ch), slip stitch (sl st) Note: The same pattern occurs in rounds 1-3, rounds 4-6, and rounds 7-9. Once you have the pattern figured out, especially round 4, all of the counting in the later rows won't be a concern. Rnd 1: Ch 4, join with sl st to form ring. Ch 3, 15 dc in ring. Join with slip st in 3rd ch of beginning ch 3. Rnd 2: Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same st, dc in next 3 st, \* (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next dc, dc in next 3 st. Repeat from \* 2 times more; join with slip st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 3. Slip st loosely in next dc. (7 stitches per side) Rnd 3: Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1), (dc, ch 2, dc, ch 1) in ch 2 sp. \*(Dc in next dc, ch 1, skip next dc) 3 times, dc in last dc before ch 2 space. (Ch 1, dc, ch 2, dc, ch 1) in ch 2 sp. Repeat from \* 2 times more; (dc in next dc, ch 1, skip next dc) 3 times, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 4. Finish off. (5 ch 1 spaces per side) Rnd 4: Join next color with sc in dc immediately to the right of any corner ch 2 space. Working BEHIND ch 2, (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch 2 of rnd 2. Sc in next dc, dc behind next ch 1 sp into ch 2 of rnd 2. \*(Sc in next dc, dc behind next ch 1 sp into skipped dc of rnd 2) 3 times, sc in next dc. Dc behind next ch 1 into ch 2 sp of rnd 2, sc in next dc, (dc, ch 2, dc) behind ch 2 sp into ch 2 sp of rnd 2, sc in next dc, dc behind ch 1 sp into ch 2 sp of rnd 2. Repeat from \* 2 times more. Dc in each st across, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 3. Slip st loosely in next dc. (17 stitches per side) Rnd 6: Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1), (dc, ch 2, dc, ch 1) in ch 2 sp. \*(Dc in next dc, ch 1, skip next dc) 8 times, dc in last dc before ch 2 space. (Ch 1, dc, ch 2, dc, ch 1) in ch 2 sp. Repeat from \* 2 times more; (dc in next dc, ch 1, skip next dc) 13 times, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 4. Finish off. (15 ch 1 spaces per side) Rnd 10: Join next color with sc in dc immediately to the right of any corner ch 2 space. Working BEHIND ch 2, (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch 2 of rnd 8. Sc in next dc, dc behind next ch 1 sp into ch 2 of rnd 8. \*(Sc in next dc, dc behind next ch 1 sp into skipped dc of rnd 8) 13 times, sc in next dc. Dc behind next ch 1 into ch 2 sp of rnd 8, sc in next dc, (dc, ch 2, dc) behind ch 2 sp into ch 2 sp of rnd 8, sc in next dc, dc behind ch 1 sp into ch 2 sp of rnd 8. Repeat from \* 2 times more. Dc in each st across, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 3. Slip st loosely in next dc, sl st into corner ch 2 sp. (37 stitches per side) Measure work. If square measures 11 inches, use Rnd 12A. If square measures 11 1/2 inches, use Rnd 12B. Rnd 12A: Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 sp, dc in each dc, \* (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 sp, dc in each dc. Repeat from \* 2 times more. Finish off. Rnd 12B: Ch 1, 3 sc in ch 2 sp, sc in each dc, \* 3 sc in ch 2 sp, sc in each dc. Repeat from \* 2 times more. Finish off. Variation: For a not-so-lacy version of this square, in rounds 4, 7, and 10, do single crochets in back loop only.
