This pair of mittens won 2nd place in the Gloves Category, Handknitting Section of Creative Arts at the 2011 Perth Royal Show, Western Australia's largest annual community event. " The diamond motif and crystal beads create a pair of delicate mittens. The motif runs up along the top of the hand from the cuff to the fingers. Bottom Cuff

Cast on 48 stitches. Join to start knitting in the round (using the Magic Loop Technique). There will be 24 sts on each needle. Start Eyelet Rib pattern, repeating the pattern (12 times) all round. Knit 3 repeats of the Eyelet Rib pattern (12 rounds).

Hand

Before you begin Diamante pattern, move the last 2 stitches on needle 2 to needle 1, so there will be 26 sts on needle 1 & 22 sts on needle 2.

Round 1

Needle 1 - k8, p2, k2, kfb, k3, p2, k8 (27 sts) Needle 2 - knit all the sts (22 sts)

Round 2

Needle 1 - k8, p2, (Row 1 of Diamante pattern), p2, k8 Needle 2 - knit all the sts Continue in this set pattern until 4 repeats (32 rounds) of the Diamante pattern have been done. On the last round of the hand section : Left Hand - knit the set pattern till the last 4 sts, pm, k2, pm, k2 Right Hand - knit the set pattern on needle 1, k2, pm, k2, pm, knit to the end of needle 2

Thumb Gusset

The instructions below are for the left thumb & for the right thumb, the increases are done at the start of needle 2 (as described above). Round 1 (increase round) Needle 1 - k8, p2, (Diamante pattern), p2, k8 Needle 2 - knit to the 1st marker, sm, kfb, work to next marker, kfb, sm, k2 Rounds 2, 3, 4 (plain rounds) Needle 1 - k8, p2, (Diamante pattern), p2, k8 Needle 2 - knit to the 1t marker, sm, knit to next marker, sm, k2 Repeat these 4 rounds until there are 18 sts in between the 2 markers. Next round - continue with established pattern until the 1st marker, remove marker, m1, slip 18 sts onto waste yarn, m1, k2 Continue with established pattern on all needles (49 sts in total) until you have a total of 10 repeats of the Diamante pattern.

Top Cuff

Before you start on the cuff, move the 1"t 2 sts on needle 1 to needle 2 so you will have 25 sts on needle 1 & 24 sts on needle 2. Needle 1 - k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2tog, p1, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2 (24 sts) Needle 2 - (k2, p2) 6 times (24 sts) Start Row 2 of the Eyelet Rib pattern, repeating the pattern (12 times) all round. Knit 3 repeats of the Eyelet Rib pattern (12 rounds) & then Row 1 of Eyelet Rib pattern. Cast off loosely in rib pattern.

Thumb

Transfer the 18 sts from the waste yarn onto the needles as follows : Place the last st, followed by the 1"t st & 7 sts onto needle 1 & the remaining 9 sts onto needle 2. Next round - on needle 1, k1, pick up 2 sts in the gap between the stitches, k1 & then knit the remaining sts (20 sts in total) Next round - k1, k2tog, k2tog, knit to the end (18 sts in total) Knit for 10 rounds. Cast off loosely. Finishing Weave in all the ends. Block mittens.
