by Susanne Reese2011/02 KARREE is a two-colored slip-stitch pattern easy to follow and quick to knit. Choose a darker semisolid-color as Main Color (MC) supporting the brightness of the Contrasting Color (CC). Construction: Toe Up / Hybrid Short-Row + Flap Heel Techniques used: Judy's magic cast-on / Magic Loop / knitting in the round / jogless striping Materials: About 50 (60/70) g Wollmeise Twin or any other 4- ply Sockyarn as MC (shown in colorway "Flaschenpost") About 40 (50/60)g Wollmeise Twin or any other 4- ply Sockyarn as CC (shown in colorway "Fruhling") 2,5 mm circular needle long enough for magic loop (alt. DPN's) or size to give you the correct gauge. Gauge in slip-stitch pattern: 34 sts x 52 rows = 10 x 10 cm Sizes: Medium = 39 (L = 42/XL = 44 in brackets)

Toe
Cast on 28 (32/36) sts using Judy's magic-cast on ( 14-16-18 sts on each needle) http://www.persistentillusion.com/blogblog/techniques/magiccast-on/magic-cast-on-2 Round 1: knit Round 2: \*k1, KLL, k to last st , KRL, k1\* on each needle KLL: pick up the loop from the stitch 2 stitches below the one just knitted and knit into it KRL: pick up the loop from the stitch below the next stitch on the left needle and knit into it through theback-loop. This causes a smaller band of increases as usual. (See tutorials for KLL and KRL on knitinghelp: http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/increases) Repeat rds 1 +2 until you have 60 (66/72) sts in total on both needles. In case you will have 66 sts only work increases on needle 2 in the last increase-round (32/34 sts) From now on needle 1 will be the bottom while needle no. 2 marks the top of the foot. Beginning of the round is in the middle of needle 1.

Pattern:
Knit 15 (16/18) sts in MC, place marker (optional), join CC and knit 1 round in CC Jogless stripes: lf you reach the part were the two yarns are attached, go on knitting with the lower one.Don'twist them! That's all. If you need more informations, see grumperina's website here http://www.grumperina.com/knitblog/archives/2008/03/dont_worry_keep_1.htm Continue in KARREE-pattern on both needles until you have reached 14,5 (16/17) cm from the top of the toe, stop at the end of a CC-round.

Gusset:
The gusset is placed in the middle of the sole and is easy to knit. Just increase 2 sts every second round as follows: Rd 1 (MC): k1, inc 1 by picking up the bar between 2 sts and knit it through the back-loop, place marker, continue in KARREE-pattern to the last st of the round, pm, inc1, k1 Rd 3 (MC): k2, inc1, slip marker, continue in KARREE-pattern to the next marker, sm, inc1, k2 Rd 4(CC): knit all sts Continue until 24 (28/32) sts are increased, stop at the end of round 2, break CC Now you have 54 (60/68) sts on needle 1 (bottom) and 30 (36) sts on needle 2 (upper foot)
Heel:
Continue in MC and knit 15 (16/18) sts, turn and work one double stitch. Double stitch: Pick up the first stitch as if to purl, yarn in front. Tightly pull the yarn away from you behind the needles; the stitch now consists of two parts (double stitch) Purl 29 (31/35) sts, turn, work next double st, knit to the last st before the double st which was knitted in the row below, turn, work double st, purl to the last st knitted in the row below. Continue working short-rows until you have 8 (9/10) double-stitches on every side. Knit 13 (13/15) sts, then knit the two parts of the double st together to the last one. Knit the last double-stitch together with the next stitch through the back-loop, turn. Slip 1, knit to the last st before the gap, knit 2 sts together through the back-loop (k2togtbl), turn Slip 1, purl to the last st before the gap, p2 tog, turn Continue in this way until all stitches minus 1 of the gusset (i.e. the stitches on both sides of the heel flap on needle 1) are used up, stop at the end of the last wrong side row, turn. Slip 1, knit to the middle of needle 1,join CC and continue in CC to the last 2 st, knit 2 together through the back-loop and continue with needle 2. Knit 2 together at the beginning of needle 1. Now you have 30 (32+34/36) sts on every needle. Continue working KARREE-pattern up to desired length of leg.
Cuff
Break CC and knit 1 round in MC. Work rib pattern \*k1tbl, p1\* for about 20 rounds and use a stretchy bind-off. My favorite bind-off is this: knit 2 sts following the stitch pattern, slip them back to the left needle and knit them together through the back-loop (-1 st), continue until all stitches arebound off. Weave in loose ends, wear and have fun
