Description:
This earflap hat features an alternating moss stitch and rib pattern in a patchwork style. It is worked in around on either double point needles or short circular needles. Skill Level: Intermediate
Materials:
3.5 oz (100 g) of medium/worsted weight cotton or acrylic. 4 - Size 7 dbl points (or size needed for gauge) Size 7 circular needle, 16 or 20 inches in length (optional) Stitch marker Yarn needle
Gauge:
Finished hat is 22 inches around at base and should fit most adults. K2, P2 rib = 6 st per inch; P2, K2 moss = 4 st per inch; 7 rows per inch for both
Notes:
Ear Flaps are worked separately, back and forth on two dbl point needles. Entire hat can be worked on dbl point needles or a short circular needle, but working Hat Base may be easier on a short circular needle.

With RS facing you, start with first stitch of live row and slip purlwise all 20 stitches onto circular needle. The last stitch slipped should be the last stitch worked on Ear Flap (where yarn is cut). Cast on 30 onto circular needle. Cut yarn. Pick up Ear Flap B. As with Ear Flap A slip first stitch of live row purlwise onto circular needle. Last stitch slipped is last stitch worked on Ear Flap (where yarn is cut). D onto circular needle. Place marker to indicate start of round. 1o0 stitches in hat base All pieces, ear flaps and cast-on sts, are joined together by Rnd 1. Be careful of maintaining tension and prevent twisting of sts. Hat Rounds become easier to work with after 2 Rnds are complete. Hat Rounds[100 sts] Rnd 1 & 2: (K2, P2) around. Rnd 3 & 4: [(K2, P2)\*2, K4, (P2, K2)\*2], repeat [] 5 times Rnd 5 - 12: Repeat Rnd 1 - 4 twice Rnd 13 & 14: (K2, P2) around Rnd 15 & 16: (P2, K2) around Rnd 17 & 18: [(K2, P2)\*2, K4, (P2, K2)\*2], repeat [] 5 times Rnd 19 - 26: Repeat Rnd 15 - 18 twice Rnd 27 & 28: (P2, K2) around Rnd 29 - 42: Repeat Rnd 1 - 14 Rnd 43 - 50: Repeat Rnd 15 - 18 twice Rnd 51: (K2tog, P2tog) around [50 sts] Rnd 52: (K1, P1) around Rnd 53: (K2tog, K1, K2tog) around [30 sts] Rnd 54: K2tog around [15 sts] Rnd 55: (K2tog)\*7, K1 [8 sts] Cut yarn leaving a 12 inch long tail. Thread yarn needle and slip 8 st purlwise onto yarn needle. Pull tight. Weave in ends. EarFlapTies(ifdesired) Cut 6 strands of yarn for thin ties as pictured (12 strands of yarn for thick ties) 2 times the length desired. Thread 1(2) strands between each of the 4 sts at the bottom of ear flap, 3 (6) per side, so that each strand hangs evenly. Braid each side and tie in a tassel on end. Cut tassel even.
