Quick & Cozy Movie Night Project: Spiffy Little Needle Roll Pattern for Knitters of All Levels

Spiffy Little Needle Roll

Pattern illustration

I made this during a movie. Okay, it was a somewhat long movie, but still accomplished during just the one movie. If you place markers every time the stitches change and you can knit without looking, markers make this a great movie theatre project. If you are new enough to knitting that the thought of not watching your work makes you faint, placing markers helps so you don't have to count. I use the dpn length for both my dpns and long needles, but my long needles do stick out rather far from the roll, I just don't mind. I included longer lengths in parenthesis for those who would be bothered. For people who really want to get picky, the smallest pattern is $7^{\circ}$ long, medium is $10^{\circ}$ , and large is $14^{\mathfrak{s}}$ . Gauge is 5.85 stitches per inch, but not seriously important. I used US size 7 needles and worsted weight yarn. Cast on 41 (medium 59, large 83) stitches. Work in moss stitch (k1, p1 across) for 5 rows. The first and last 5 stitches on every row will continue to be moss stitch, making the border. Repeat the following rows until you have a length of about 15 inches (more for really large needle collections) then do another 5 rows of moss stitch and bind off. If you have dpns, cast on 4 stitches and work 20 inches of icord (or longer for larger collections. For instance, if you added 4 inches to the length, add 4 inches of length to the icord.) Icord is worked by knitting and not turning or joining, simply bring the yarn behind the work to the starting point and keep knitting. If you do not have dpns, (or prefer a different tie) cast on 5 stitches and work in moss stitch for 20 (or more) inches. Once finished, you can sew material to the outside of the roll, or leave as is. The inside of the roll is where mostly purl bumps show and there are two strips of knit stitches. The knit stitches are raised and it is easy to just slide needles through the ridges. Small: border, k 7, p5, k7, p5, k7, border. Medium: border, k 13, p5, k13, p5, k13, border. Large: border, k 21, p5, k21, p5, k21, border. Turn and: Small: border, p7, k5, p7, k5, p7, border. Medium: border, p13, k5, p13, k5, p13, border. Large: border, p21, k5, p21, k5, p21, border.
