WOUNAAN
Luxury Stranded Hat with a Touch of Cashmere
by Bonnie Dean This original stitch pattern is inspired by a basket V design made by indigenous peoples of the Darien rainforest in Panama. The stitch pattern is accentuated by a garter stitch and 1X1 corrugated rib edge.

THE PATTERN
CO 138 sts in Color A. Pm. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist the sts. Purl rnds 1 and 3. Knit rnds 2 and 4. Rnd 5: Inc 46 sts evenly as follows: \*p2, p1f+b; rep from\* to end of rnd - 184 sts. TECHNICAL TIP: Trapping floats is not recommended in this design due to the dense gauge resulting in less than 1"/2.54 cm floats throughout the stitch pattern. TECHNICAL TIP: To make jogging stripes less noticeable, use stationary jogless stripe method by slipping the first st of the second round after the color change pwise (i.e. sl first st in rnds 8, 11, 19, 22, and 30) TECHNICAL TIP: Keep the same color dominant (yarn carried below) throughout the hat in the stripe and V pattern sections. TECHNICAL TIP: Spread out stitches on right needle when changing yarn color to avoid puckering and tight floats.

Body: Work rnds 1-27 of Chart. Work Repeat (rnds 6-27) once more. Work rnds 28-32. With Color A knit 1 rnd. DESIGNER NOTE: If a longer ski hat is desired, repeat rnds 6-27 twice. Crown shaping: Change to dpns when there are too few sts to work on circular needle. Dec rnds as follows, sl marker on rnds 2-22: Rnd 1: \*K21, k2tog, pm; rep from\* to end - 176 sts. Rnd 2: \*K20, k2tog; rep from\* to end - 168 sts. Rnd 3: \*K19, k2tog; rep from\* to end - 160 sts. Rnd 4: \*K18, k2tog; rep from\* to end - 152 sts. Rnd 5: \*K17, k2tog; rep from\* to end - 144 sts. Rnd 6: \*K16, k2tog; rep from\* to end - 136 sts. Rnd 7: \*K15, k2tog; rep from\* to end - 128 sts. Rnd 8: \*K14, k2tog; rep from\*to end - 120 sts. Rnd 9: \*K13, k2tog; rep from\* to end - 112 sts. Rnd 10: \*K12, k2tog; rep from\* to end - 104 sts. Rnd 11: \*K11, k2tog; rep from\* to end - 96 sts. Rnd 12: \*K10, k2tog; rep from\* to end - 88 sts. Rnd 13: \*K9, k2tog; rep from\* to end - 80 sts. Rnd 14: \*K8, k2tog; rep from\* to end - 72 sts. Rnd 15: \*K7, k2tog; rep from\* to end - 64 sts. Rnd 16: \*K6, k2tog; rep from\* to end - 56 sts. Rnd 17: \*K5, k2tog; rep from\* to end - 48 sts. Rnd 18: \*K4, k2tog; rep from\* to end - 40 sts. Rnd 19: \*K3, k2tog; rep from\* to end - 32 sts. Rnd 20: \*K2, k2tog; rep from\* to end - 24 sts. Rnd 21: \*K1, k2tog; rep from\* to end - 16 sts. Rnd 22: K2tog 8 times - 8 sts. Remove markers. Finishing: Break yarn and weave through remaining closing hole. Weave in all tails. Block.

Bonnie Dean
Bonnie Dean lives in Billings, MT with her husband Edward. Their son Gavin from Boulder, CO, introduced Bonnie to the knowledge of Chief Left Hand, a Southern Arapaho Chief who lived in the mid-180Os near Boulder and spoke English from childhood. This inspired Bonnie to name her company Chief Left Hand Knits, incorporating her love of hand knitting and her longstanding love of decorative and fine arts of Native American artists, along with the beauty of the spaces around Boulder where Chief Left Hand wintered. Bonnie is looking forward to applying her experience in fabric-based garment construction and design to a new medium.
